The decluttering in the garage did not go well today.
Firstly, I found my old clockwork Hornby Train set. It still works.
Secondly I found a box of mixed Walsall FC stuff, mostly 1960’s and 1970’s programmes, I used to visit the programme shop at Fellows Park and buy a bundle of various programmes, can’t remember what they chatged, but they must’ve been cheap!
Plus I found an old scrapbook, some scarves and a Sports Argus from the Saturday we won at Sheffield United to stay up on the lat day of the season in May 1981.
The Brummie-centric Argus only gave us a small paragraph on the front page, for some reason.
Headlining with Villa, who lost at Arsenal.
Wolves stayed up courtesy of their rivals being crap. This (I think) was the season prior to the start of their plumet to the bottom tier with three successive relegations.
Several more newspaper cuttings and photos in the scrapbook, which I can upload if anyone wants to see them.
I still have to go through the box properly, train set and Sports Argus distracted me.
Because Ipswich ran out of steam.
They reached the semi finals of the FA Cup and won the UEFA cup that season, playing (I’ve just looked) 66 games.
They lost 7 of their last 10 league games.
They had a wonderful team, with Muhren and Thijssen.
Funnily enough I was getting the Xmas decs down last night and this was floating around, so took a pic and sent to my Brentford supporting mates. Perhaps one of my worst Walsall memories, but also the one that made me feel like it’s actually possible to make a difference (as well as connected to a sense of community) as one of the “5 idiots” with Thanny, Percie etc.
Actually @TheRedPrince I think we are talking of two different games. The one on the ticket was in 04-05 and we lost 1-0 and it was brass, but the “five idiots” game was the following season, when we lost 5-0, and it was a little warmer.
one of my all time favourite memories. It was just an amazing night , David Preece just controlled the game. How lucky our generation were to have nights like Highbury, Anfield, Vicarage Rd.
Fond memories, after the game I got followed by a group of Arsenal fans on the tube and followed me towards Victoria coach station, thought I was going to get a right kicking, but they took me to the pub and brought me drinks and talked about how well we played.
A bit different to the 4-1 loss when the coaches had the windows put through lol
loved that team, loved that away strip and probably the best of all the great memories I have of following WFC. We drove down, me, my mate and 2 guys I didn’t know and who I haven’t seen since. We went with my brother in law, (Arsenal fan) leaving the car at his house and getting the train in. On the way back we all sat very still on the train full of Arsenal supporters. Now and again I would catch my mates eye and we allowed ourselves a satisfied smile. Remember the last leg of the M6, really empty and we were cruising. It felt so unreal. The next day I was walking up Park St as the 329 Blakenhall bus pulled in and off jumped Kenny Mower. And THAT is why I support Walsall. Walsall till I die.
