Ajax only gone and “done a Walsall”.
Whilst a similar story, it really puts our collapse into context. We were 14 clear and finished 4th. Ajax were 9 and can’t do worse than 2nd.
Anyway, I’m banishing those memories for a week. All got to be positive.
On closer inspection it’s not that comparable to Walsall. Ajax just didn’t win for 4 games, only getting 2 points from 12, which allowed PSV to overhaul the 9 point deficit.
Of course Walsall didn’t win for 13 games, but were blessed with good results for the teams around them.
Where there is some overlap with Walsall is Ajax’s xG scores. Other than the last one, these seem ridiculously unkind to Ajax.
FC Utrecht 4 (0.92) v Ajax 0 (0.77)
Ajax 1 (3.4) v Sparta Rotterdam 1 (1.13)
Ajax 0 (2.62) v NEC Nijmegen 3 (0.74)
FC Groningen 2 (1.92) v Ajax 2 (1.10)
Don’t know the details of the Eredivisie, but to me looks like Ajax were extremely unlucky over a short time frame of games whereas Walsall were a bit unlucky over a longer time frame of games (which itself is very unlucky).
I’ve also scoured Ajax’s results and have concluded that they would have cleaned up, had they not finished so poorly.
I’m sure their fans were frustrated they weren’t 20 points clear.
If they’d put more vim and vigour into there last few performances they’d have had a brillo end to their season.
They should have signed Flash
Us fans are a strange lot. Having now finally owned what happened, we now get indignant if someone suggests someone else has achieved the same. No, no we shout, that’s nowhere near what we managed to do
No doubt fans from other clubs will be scouring their record books to prove they’re had a bigger derailment.
