Agree and the brand of football we played was such a joy to watch
Shaky, mini preece, Samways and OāConnor hard to separate ⦠we need a creative mid desperately this season
Iām tempted to say our best midfield was MOC and whichever bloke was playing alongside him that particular week, but I think the Preece/Shakespeare/Childs combo is the best weāve had.
I liked Chambers/Sawyers/Mantom as well when they played together.
Bates and Evans played some great football, I wish Gary Shelton had played a lot more with them.
Paul and Caswell played well with each other but it didnāt last long, Paul retired and Caswell returned to full back.
I agree entirely with that, so exciting.to watch.
Gary Shelton stole (failed to return) my autograph book, will never forgive him for that
According to wiki, Ian Paul is still alive.
Yes, isnāt he on the back room staff at the Villa ?
Iād add Jeff Peron into the mix - what a player!
I thought heād died - hope Iām wrong then!
Yes, Iāve read that but not sure if itās current.
Walters, Foulkes and Newman
In the days when we played 4-2-4 Hodgkinson and Dudley took some beating with Taylor(C) on the left and either Davies or Askey on the right!..Of the more modern ones I I liked Samways, Merson and Corica but my all time favourite midfield would have to the one others have mentioned-Shakespeare, Childs and Preece. All young but talented players.
Loved Peron how we ever got him in the 3rd division is unbelievable he oozed class.
Am I correct in thinking that at one point Preece Childs and Shakespeare were all teenagers whilst appearing together for our first team?
Not quite, by the time Childs joined us Mini had turned 20. Shakey had also turned 20 by the time we played Salop (when Childs announced himself with that goal) but it was still a young trio, with two twenty year olds and a nineteen year old as we outclassed The Arse.
Easily
Merson, Samways, Corica and Wrack.
No place for Chrissy Marsh?
No.
The problem Iāve got with adding a fourth midfielder is that it would leave no room for Reesy in the the team. He was the outlet for the quick, one-touch , passing moves of those brilliant three. Across the midfield, then inside the full back for him to run on to. Thatās how it worked at its most effective. See Arsenal, Rotherham, Liverpool.
Thatās not to say I donāt agree with people who were saying they were lightweight at times. We were particularly vulnerable to physical teams playing the long ball- we lost crucially to Sheff Utd and Wimbledon in the 83/4 season who were doing just that. But happy days, even so. I donāt think I appreciated them then as much as I do now.
Everyone has their opinion but for me there is no way Corica getās in front of Martin OāConnor. He did play very well for us for a while behind Jorge and Junior until Mr Colin Lee decided to go all defensive after losing to Crystal Palace.
