Accrington Stanley (A) 26th October 3pm

“Stanley … of noble fame and worth” (Shakespeare)

It’s quite a rare event that sees us playing against a club even longer-established than ourselves, but this is such an event. Accrington were founder members of the Football League, finishing in 7th place in its first season, when we were still a mixture of Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts playing at The Chuckery. They made a graceful exit from the League four years later, resigning at the same time we joined as Division 2 was created - they needn’t have worried as we finished our first League season in bottom place!

As far as the present day is concerned you might think that Accrington are in a precarious position, only 2 places above the relegation zone, but it’s a bit misleading. Their away form has rather let them down, winning only one game out of six played, but at home they’ve only lost one out of six so shouldn’t be taken lightly. Most recent League 2 form looks like this:

21 September Port Vale (H) Drew 2-2
1 October Cheltenham Town (A) Lost 2-1
5 October Morecambe (H) Won 2-1
12 October Gillingham (A) Won 2-1
19 October Barrow (H) Won 1-0
22 October M K Dons (A) Lost 2-1

Leading goalscorer (with 4 to his credit) is Irishman Dara Costelloe, who is either a Midfielder or a Left-winger depending on which website you consult. As far as team discipline is concerned they have a young man with Nigerian heritage who has managed to gather 5 yellows and a red in the 12 games Accrington have played (Zach Awe).

Like ourselves, Accrington have moved away from the 17,500 capacity ground known as Peel Park into a modern dinky equivalent known (for sponsorship reasons) as the WHAM stadium in 1968 - its capacity is 5,450 but there are good reports about the attitude of staff and stewards there, and glowing tributes to their meat pies which are probably not Balti though.

This will be the last League 2 game before the F. A. Cup takes over in the first weekend of November. Accrington will be travelling to the West Midlands at take on Rushall Olympic while we entertain Bolton Wanderers.

I haven’t seen any reports as to the seriousness or otherwise of Ryan Stirk’s injury, but assuming he is fit then our starting formation will probably be unchanged from the Grimsby and Carlisle games. Forecasting this one - possibly a bit tricky, as I say, Accrington’s League 2 position is not as bad as it looks, and I think a 1-1 draw would be quite acceptable - and it would keep us in the automatic promotion section no matter what the competition does!

Accrington FC were founded in 1878 and were founder members of the football league, they dissolved in 1921.

Accrington Stanley FC were founded in 1891 and joined the league in 1921. They resigned from the league in 1962 and went into liquidation in 1966.

A new Accrington Stanley were formed in 1968 and it is this iteration of Accrington Stanley Walsall are playing on Saturday.

So bit open to debate whether they are longer established than us.

Great preview @Welsh_Saddler

Thanks for that intro…very good. I also think this could be a draw 2-2 sounds about right.

The stadium itself is relatively small but generates a real football atmosphere. The main stand is fully seated but with the exception of a small row of seats at the from of the Clayton Terrace, all 3 others are terracing. The ‘Stanley Ultras’ stand behind the goal opposite the away fans and generate a huge amount of noise.

Away Fans

Visiting supporters are situated in the Coppice Terrace behind one of the goals and are open to the elements as the stand has no roof. The Whinney Hill Stand is also allocated to away fans if demand for tickets is high. Both are standing only. Supporters of an ‘away’ persuasion are advised to cover up club colours as a mark of respect to the home team and its followers.

Where To Drink

The main away fan’s pub which is a few minutes from the ground and is called The Whittakers Arms. It is situated just 200 yards away from the old Peel Park ground from the 1960’s era of Stanley, so you football historians out there may want to take a peek at that. They do a selection of home-cooked meals in the pub or restaurant including a quite superb egg and chips (£2.95) and cheese pie (£3.25). They have great facilities including a WPA endorsed pool table, beer garden (lacks grass), sky sports, topless darts and lots more besides. Walking distance from the ground is about 20 minutes, in a car around 5 minutes.

The Crown Inn on Whalley Road which virtually overlooks the ground offers a warm welcome to all supporters including well behaved visitors. The Crown’s lease has recently been taken over by Accrington Stanley and has undergone redecoration and will at some point in the near future become a Stanley themed pub, featuring memorabilia and photographs from the past to present day which promises to be a veritable feast for the eyes.

Food and Drink (in the arena)

Food on offer inside the ground includes; a range of Pukka Pies; All Steak, Chicken Balti, Meat & Potato and Cheese & Onion (all £4.80), Sausage Rolls (£3.75), Cheeseburgers (£6), Hot Dogs (£2) Cream Pies (£4.50) and Pot Noodles (£3.30).

By Train

The nearest / closest train station to the Crown Ground, is Accrington. This is approx 20 minutes walk from the ground. Leave the station and proceed down the hill passing the main Blackburn road, follow the road down the hill passing the King Street Pub on your left, follow the road down to the main roundabout, cross over the road and head up the hill passing the Aldi supermarket still on your left.

At the top of the hill turn left into Whalley Road. Follow this road straight on through the traffic lights, the Grey Horse and the Oaklea pubs are 300 metres through the lights. Carry on straight along Whalley Road over the mini roundabout for approx 200 metres. Livingstone Road is on your right, turn down Livingstone Road and the ground is on your left.

Whats the deal with tickets? Just rang ticket office and fab lady Elisabeth said no standing tickets only seated? I am not that bothered i will stand anyway  Have they changed where away fans go?

Think they put away fans in the covered seating on the side now unless ya bring thousands then they’ll open up behind the goal

Last season we were in the seats down the side, the weather was horrendous and I don’t think anyone was behind the goal think it was shut. Assume it will open if we fill the seating down the side.

Another important step for the saddlers to take in their quest to get out of this league.
No team will roll over but with what we have we are more than capable of turning anyone over.
There’s a confidence in the team and a belief that they can hold their own regardless of who’s in front of them and it’s wonderful to see.
We have momentum we have swagger and we have the best team that we have had in years.

I hope there is not anyone directly behind you who cannot stand for health reasons. It would ruin their view. This is a real gripe of mine when fans stand up in seated areas as there are a number of elderly Walsall fans who cannot stand up.

I am an elderly Walsall fan and i am not that inconsiderate, i will stand at the back. Apologies if i dont search out my allocated seat :slightly_smiling_face:

What happens if the weather is inclement though?

Must be out of date, seeing as we are selling seated tickets only at the moment.

Cream Pies for £4.50 is interesting though :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :joy:

How many tickets we sold so far?

They had 20 tickets remaining yesterday of an 518 initial allocation i should imagine these will shifted today. Leaving pay on the day standing tickets. I think we take about 650

They posted about an hour or so ago there was less than 80 left. I ordered ours just after that.

A bit harsh to make him take the rap for that, he’s just a young gun having some fun after all.
