Aden Flint Signs

It’s a double-edged sword. On the one hand if we sell players for a profit we make coin, but on the other, if we sell them to the wrong club, even if we think they’re actually not part of our future plans, that’s not a good thing. Almost like it’s a lose:lose situation if you’re trying to create an argument over both your positions.

It’s almost like you’ve both completely missed the point of what I am saying. I wasn’t talking about the financial aspect of the deal whatsoever. It’s a good deal for the club and I am glad we got money for him, as many other have said. That is not a lose lose. In this case, I have no issue cashing in on the player whatsoever.

I was discussing how that is no proof that the player is actually any good.

This 10,000 line doesn’t make sense. LP talked about 5,000 to make a difference not so long ago but now the goalposts have been moved by Ben Sadler to 10,000. It was also said by BB at the recent forum had we have been promoted we would have had a budget to compete in league one. Times have certainly moved on but 10,000 ? Really.

Maybe it’s an aspirational goal, poorly expressed?

I did point this out at the Forum. Didn’t get much of an answer.

They just pick random excuses out their arse at times. Simple as that.

10,000 is an example of moving the goalposts to such an extent that it justifies continued failure. You don’t need 10k to get out of league 2 or maintain your position in league 1. As you say, things haven’t moved on that much.

6-6.5k should be sufficient to get out of this league and 8k in league 1 would be the top line for us. We have not averaged 10,000 in a season since the early 60’s.

His answer to this was that people laughed at him when he said he would sell the stadium out at Morecambe. 6 and half thousand capacity …

And they never did sell it out IIRC. Certainly not regularly.

Edit: Morecambe’s highest average was 4,572 when they got relegated from League 1 in 22/23, followed by 4,002 the following season back in L2. They never reached 6k once.

Don’t get me wrong, historically these are very good crowds for Morecambe, but Ben is over reaching if he suggested they were getting capacity 6k crowds, because they weren’t.

hmmm, not sure if Flint has come here to play football, or pillage and burn down the villages between Walsall and Litchfield.

Interesting contrast between our veteran players, not sure what Aden will think of Uncle Albert’s twinkle toe’s tik tok videos :joy:

I didn’t realise that was you who asked the question (and you were right to do so) if memory serves me correctly they didn’t do much but waffle about it. I certainly don’t believe that we need 10,000 gates to compete in this league.

He is just what all the young defenders need. He’s definitely a leader, can’t see many people beating him in the air. He won’t have to run up and down the pitch so he can just concentrate on his defensive role (same goes for Farq by the way), and he will be so dangerous at corners. All in all, a very good signing, and Dave’s gone, win win.

To be fair, I tried to fit all the questions I had for the forum into one, considering we were unexpectedly told we were only allowed one question each, which has never been the case in the past. It probably got lost in the rest of what I said :joy:

But yeah, patently a ridiculous thing to say regardless.

A good bit of money ball business that Flint signed / Dave sold - Billy Beane would be proud (BTW who knew Mr Beane was a minority owner nowadays is f Barnsley)

Albert Adomah was 36 when he came and his legs had not gone.

On the other hand, Steve Staunton and Stephen Ward were also 36.

Spoke with my colleague who’s a big stags fan, said his legs had gone a bit in league 1 but was great for them in league 2. Clough had a habit of bringing him on for the last few minutes up top when chasing a game. Said he was ‘mustard’ for them in league 2 though and will head anything so will at least be able to do the things Dave couldn’t

Flint is a bit younger and it looks like he takes care of himself, so I know it’s not exactly the same, but I remember when we took on Peter Clarke at the well-ripened age of 41 (sorry) after he was in the Team of the Year for Tranmere the season before. Left us short at the back when he was shipped off to Oldham with minimal fanfare.

Based on what we all know the only way we would get 10,000 crowds is if: a) we got to the Championship and b) we built a 2 tier stand at the away end to accommodate the away followings of Leeds, Sheffield clubs, etc, etc. An attractive, competitive team in L1 might attract 6 to 7k Walsall fans but that imho is a realistic although challenging aspiration.

I’d play Flint in every league game we can (so long as his performances are decent), I wouldn’t even put him on the bench for any cup games. This is why I think we still need another centre back. We’ve got 6 but I’d expect 1-2 to be injured regularly.

I’d also just go second string with the tinpot Cup and sacrifice it if need be. We’ve got solid cover in most positions now.

Flint scored his first ever hat-trick in an 8–2 victory over Walsall, for Bristol City.
