If you do, then I presume only one team is allowed to be promoted this year as only Notts Co average above 10,000 of all the clubs in the league. Idiotic statement from Ben.
We wouldnât average 10K gates if we were in L1 let alone L2, itâs been 50 or 60 years since we have, the world had changed a lot since then!
Welcome to Walsall Aden. We just need
Talking about 10000 crowds at Bescot proves how out of touch with the area and naive Trivela are.
I donât wanna keep harping on about last season and we all wanna move on but Trivela must surely realise that the opportunity to really move forward in terms of attendances and increased interest from the community was in our grasp last season - to expect a positive reaction to a claim of needing 10k attendances after the debacle we witnessed is plain stupid..
He didnât talk about 10,000 gates at Bescot. He said that clubs with that level of support have more resources and are therefore more likely to be top of the table. He did say he thought the club could continue to grow the fanbase as it has done over the past 3 years although he acknowledged that what happens on the pitch has a big bearing on that. I thought his comments both as reported and at the meeting were sensible.
I donât disagree with your view at all but the comments were made in relation to clubs with 10k attendances being âmore competitiveâ at our level - therefore surely the inference being made is that for us to compete at this level, thatâs what we should be aspiring to - otherwise why bother making the comments in the first place??
Unless of course itâs an early excuse for the forthcoming season if requiredâŚ..
I didnât get that inference but I can understand your view. I think he was simply saying that if your support is better you can spend more and stand a better chance of success. However football isnât like that thank goodness and as we all know many factors come into play . it maybe that he was trying to assuage some of the anger over last season. If so it was ham fisted.
No he didnâtâŚthis is what he saidâŚâultimately crowds of 5000 âŚ6000 that probably once upon a time enabled you to be a sustainable football club at this level, reality is thatâs just no longer the case. You know you have to have crowds probably in excess of 10 or 11 thousand to be able to be sustainableâŚto be (loses his thread somewhat) âŚright up the top in terms of your wage budgetâŚyou know thereâs a number of clubs who are artificially inflating that, and are quite within their rights to do itâŚbut the consequence is that everyone else ends up having to fork out more and more every year and clubsâ losses are increasingly mounting. Unfortunately we are seeing the reality of what that can lead to so I think its imperative⌠- (and then goes off on a tangent about government regulator)â
Thatâs literally what he said, the âcrowds in excess of 10-11kâ comment was in relation to being a sustainable club at this level that was able to compete near the top budget wise, so clearly that infers that Walsall, and others, would need crowds at that level to do so while also remaining financially sustainable.
So football has changed and the club are changing their views to match the wider knowledge. Hardly a stick to beat them with.
Not impressed with flint on yesterdayâs performance.. hopefully this is just match rust..stuttle looks like hes gonna be some player tho
I think that confirms my point. At no time did he say we needed 10,000 to be successful. Your second sentence sums it up"You know you have to have crowds probably in excess of 10or11 thousand to be sustainableâŚright up the top in terms of your wage budget" He then goes on to say clubs that donât get those gates but try to match the wages get into trouble. That is his point âŚto pay more than you can afford leads to disaster .I think he is right. I donât see anything controversial in that argument. To me it is common sense.
So 5 years ago when Pomlett said it. Hell of a change in that short amount of time âŚ
I think he is talking absolute bollocks, but either way, he doubled down on it at the forum and said people laughed when he said he would sell out the ground at Morecambe, but he sets high goals.
He will fall short of this one. By some way.
Well it was a subtle argument.
Subtle? He said it on camera, then doubled down on it in a filmed forum to a room full of people ![]()
No he said we need that to be sustainable and have a budget that is top end.
Its utter nonsense.
You are the one claiming that you need to have a top end budget to have a greater chance of success, so surely the logic of your own argument, if you agree with Sadler, is that we need IN EXCESS of 10/11k crowds?
There are lots of ways clubs can increase their playing budget without increasing attendances. Selling players for profit, which we seem to be doing a good bit of, having extra outside income steams, which we also seem to have plenty of, and having owners that recognise the potential for growing the club with investment in the playing budget - which is usually where the coversation magically shifts to increasing attendances (insert arbitrary figure based on some unfounded generalisations). I wonder what increase in attendances we would be looking at next season if Trivela had put their hand in their pocket instead of signing a load of cheap loans and duds like Levi Amantchi? Trouble is they were far too busy with Drogheda and Silkeborg according to Boycott, and we all know how much moneyâs going in there - ÂŁ500k just for a fook up in Drogs case, shame we couldnât have used that in January to nail down promotion and significant growth?
Your second paragraph is not correct. I think we can get promotion without a top end budget because as I pointed out above (Post 106) as many other factors come into play.
If we had 10k crowds, we still wouldnât pay the âgoing rateâ for proven players.
It still wouldnt guarantee promotion. Bradord took 6 years and Notts County still here after 2.
There are several teamâs with lower gates and budgets who have been promoted in last few years. Itâs a ready made excuse incase we arent challenging this year for the âwe told you soâ moment
On the topic of Aden Flint, he looked incredibly rusty in his cameo last night, at least a fortnight behind the other members of the group. Iâd be amazed if he was in a position to start next Saturday and his standards were set along way below those of DD.
