Oldham look like the outlier in there, but at the start of the stats,it looks like they were near to peaking.
“In June 1982, the club appointed Joe Royle as manager and a new era was underway. Royle’s side finished 7th in his first season in charge, but fell to 19th in his second. In the 1986–87 season, Oldham narrowly missed promotion to the First Division finishing three points behind Portsmouth and losing in the inaugural playoffs to Leeds United, when previous seasons would have seen them automatically promoted.”
Good question. We don’t seem to have dropped nearly as far in the list-51st to 57th. Maybe it was the end of the World Cup boom.
Edit I was looking at the wrong list. We dropped more than that ,to 69th So I don’t know.
He bought the shares in the club off Davenmanor for a quid and the stadium off Denglen for £249,999 (ono). Allegedly nobody else wanted in, and the club was on its knees (copyright J Bonser). Three years later he bought the land off Severn Trent. Again, nobody else would invest except Jeff (copyright J Bonser).
We still owe him over £1 million don’t forget. I think ,but the accounts will show it, that most of that was lent to the Club in the early days of Bescot when we were in great trouble.
Indeed, and given the millions he has milked from the club, he could write off this debt if we was the benefactor he claims to be. Unlike the rent issue, there would be no legal/tax implications.
Yes and when the times comes for him to sell it will be interesting to see what happens to that debt. If he wants a decent legacy then he should forego repayment as he takes his money for the freehold.
Why wait until then?
I will have a crafty tenner with you WalsallOne that those loans will be repaid long before the club is sold . In fact, we both will most likely be dead by that point .
Great work. The only issue I have with comparing attendances from our division 1 stretch from 2001-2004, as the comparison would not be valid as our attendances would be propped up by higher away attendances than those in division 2.
Not sure how this can be solved, but in that stretch the statistics aren’t valid. Which is unfortunate, because if we could compare home attendances only it would be clear to see if the town responded to our on field success.
I think the repayment of the loans is his exit strategy. Over the past few years the debt to him has been reduced and the penny pinching we are seeing in facilities and the team are evidence this is the plan to re pay himself before disappearing and cashing in his pension.
Number one fan my arse.
