I think he has done a very good job since his appointment, however, he’s getting a soft ride from those that think that Sadler should have been binned. As CEO that is his call, as ultimately he’s the one accountable for the performance of the football club.
I assumed orders to remove Sadler would come from above.
If what you say is right, then yes, my opinion would be different.
Sadler should have gone, there is no question of that to me. The outcome proves that.
Would imagine that is not his decision, he’d have some say, but would be within the remit of the board, with Boycott being ultimate arbiter.
I don’t know for sure, but as someone that worked in such positions over the years, it was my responsibility to hire and fire into the business I was running. With senior positions (Directors, Senior managers etc), I might need a decision rubber stamping by the group board, which was always done.
It’s not like it was with Bonser as the singular owner of the club, basically being the Chairman and CEO.
Trivela own 3 football clubs and BB does not run Walsall FC, Ben Sadler does. As he is accountable for the financial performance of the club, and football is the product, then why wouldn’t he be the man that has the final say as to whether Sadler is sacked or not?
I wouldn’t accept the job without the authority to do so.
Of course I could be way off and he might just be a commercial director with CEO as his title.
In which case, he’s not a real CEO
Football exists in a bubble though, where you can’t equate roles and responsibilities with those in the real world.
I think I know which Sadler of the two I would be holding responsible for the failure this season if I was the chairman or board member .
Some might argue that also applies to Mat Sadler the manager
He does all of that but dont think he would be able to remove Sadler without approval from his superiors.
He did post something along the lines of “now is not the time to dissect” which indicates to me the summer could be a little tricky for Mat Sadler.
I certainly hope so, irrespective of what we achieve or don’t achieve this season.
I think we would all agree a full debrief needs to take place on the season as a whole. Generally I think it would be good to give it a few weeks to fully digest the whole season, and take the emotion of more recent events out of it but given we will most likely have the season extended by the best part of 2 weeks at least and the outcome of the debrief may be a parting of wats with the manager I would urge Ben Sadler to do this at the earliest possible opportunity once the season has concluded.
The more I think about things the more I feel it’s a clear situation to unfold…
Promoted - he stays (hopefully Trivela will put in some very specific measurables so he’s not allowed to meander his way through another season..)
Not promoted - he’s a gonner
Trivela, BS and everyone else in the senior team will be in an untenable position if we fail to achieve promotion from where we were etc..…
I honestly don’t think he’s going anywhere.
I’m sure he’ll manage a couple of weeks away at some point!
I absolutely agree that we will need a period of time to reflect upon the situation and that will require a calm and careful evaluation of the season as a whole.
What I don’t want to hear is excuses from Trivela because people feel very let down and are quite rightly angry at how this situation was allowed to come to its full horrendous conclusion.
The situation calls for open dialogue and some soul searching on their part.
The fans of this wonderful club of ours have been magnificent throughout this season turning up in record numbers spending their hard earned cash travelling thousands of miles during the season and they deserve better than what’s ultimately been a shambolic end to what could have been a dream come true.
This has the potential to be very damaging moving forward with supporters walking away and it’s those very people Walsall Football Club can’t afford to lose.
Yes I agree. If he has grounds to make a change (which he surely has atm) then they would be undermining his position by not supporting him. He would also have the excuse back to them if revenue / profitability started to slide due to poor performance on the pitch.
You won’t because they won’t hold the next focus meeting until late June or even into July and they’ll be “no point raking over the past, we all need to move toward onto the new season together” or similar.
A lot will hang on two things.
- No promotion and Sadler still in post.
- Promotion.
If the first, then it’ll be a difficult night for them.
If the second, then the club and Sadler has delivered and any serious criticism would be out of order.
I think the supporters may well dictate that. He’s very highly liked within the Trivela group so I agree that on their part I think they will be reluctant to part ways and will leave them with a lot of embarrassment and a hefty bill after giving him a new contract as recently as January. If the season ends in failure and the toxicity amongst the fanbase is as I fear then I think his job becomes untenable for me, Trivela have to bring the fans along on the journey. They can take a bit of flak through periods of poor form but this is more than that.
Nor do I.
We will do the very Walsall thing of sacking him too late into next season.
