Birmingham (A) - FL Trophy - Tuesday 3rd September 7.45pm

Yes

I wonder how much the return of Sadler will add to the Blues audience. I know before he’s said how much he loved his time at the Blues and how much high regard the Blues fans still hold him in. Sure he will get a wonderful reception from both sets of supporters. Would be a lovely gesture if the Blues PA played some of his beloved Maroon 5 pre-match.

It wasn’t me, don’t think I know @NorthernSaddler .
Although you’ve got to be wary of those stale pork pies with their concrete hardened crusts.

I remember a few years back, one of my nephews mate’s had been on Villa’s books for about 10 years, so his parents both had season tickets, then as he got to about 16 they decided that he hadn’t made the grade and released him, ended up at Walsall Wood.
His parents were beside themselves, all those years of trudging up and down the country day and night, they were so distraught that they actually threw their season ticket in the bin, so i said i would have them, i could make some money out of em :joy: and one of the games was against the blues at villa park, so as i had never been to one i went.
As the game was coming to the end i made my way out, and saw about 50 lads ,making their way around to the Villa end shouting “zulu zulu zulu” and was confronted by a very large hooded black lad with his arms stretched out
So i lifted my sleeve up and showed him my Saddlers tattoo and said " do you think i am going to get beat up defending this shower of shite"
He just laughed and walked off :joy:

The White Swan. Met my wife in there. The landlady retired a few years ago and the pub closed. It was reopened for a short while before closing again (not enough passing trade or local Irish any more), unfortunately. I used to play football for their Sunday League side. A very average side but we were the league champions at drinking. We’d go on football tours to Galway and Dublin where we would watch a lot of TV football while sampling several pints of Guinness! Great times.

Bristol Street Motors Trophy

My Dad bought a Cortina from Bristol Street Motors. It conked out on the way home, so we made a grand entrance being towed into our street by an AA truck.
It’s an omen I tell you…

Love that.

We adored that place. Like I say, the mild was to die for. If we went in midweek they’d give us the snug round the back to ourselves so that we could play poker (sure, it’s only for fun lads ). They’d bring the next round to the table.

Watched a few big fights in there too. Nigel Benn vs Eubank amongst others.

I can still see the green tiles as you either went to the bog or the aforementioned snug. Mosaic tiled floors.

At closing time (which was a movable feast even when there was a “legal” closing time) we’d head either over to the Indian (I want to call it Sharmas) opposite the Adam and Eve on Bradford St or to Mockams which was on the main Digbeth drag at the back of the Ship a’ Shore.

When I was 18/19 there would be a split in the group as some would go to the Adam and Eve as there were often live bands in there. We lost a few to the Institute too. A club I didn’t mind with all its different rooms and genres, but I was never that big of a clubber.

The Irish centre itself was a big music venue for a time too. Saw The Charlatons in there a hundred years ago.

But going the White Swan with our dads for mild, poker (three card brag - always three card brag) and then a curry will be my fondest memories of that little corner of the world.

Always a few incidents around there but nothing like what was going on at the big clubs a quarter of a mile up the road. Other than the smaller Indie clubs like Edward’s No. 8 the big clubs used to scare me. You’d go the Dome and get lost after a couple, then you’d see some poor bastard with a bottle, glass or random sharp metal object in their eye or neck. Nah - Digbeth beat Brum city centre every time. And the White Swan was home from home.

Disappointed to read it has shut again but like you say it’s natural constituency now scattered. Shame.

Johnson in the squad.

Just had to search to see who Kilroy was. Young goalkeeper.

Good to see a couple of youngsters on the bench.

Defensive cover looking a bit worrying.

Even as a sub, why is he always the last to be named, there not in alphobetic order are they anyway

I think subs are listed by squad number , Danny Johnson is number 39 I think.

Reported 15 million striker we’re up against there!

Football has gone bonkers - possible £15m spend on one player in League 1!

£15m.
Probably more than our football club (including the stadium) are worth!

1 upfront?

Probably Maher alongside Lowe?

Yeah, or playing just off Lowe, i was thinking.

Blues have a lot of injury problems I read earlier in Birmingham Mail
