Chesterfield (H) February 15th, 3pm

I was thinking today, other than the goal, did Simkin have a save to make. I know they missed that golden chance at 1-0, and I think there may have been one save in the second half. They did look dangerous at times, but we did a good job of blocking them out in the second half, it really was a return to how we were playing before our blip.

You are right about Simkin, he is a safe pair of hands in some respects, but there is something not right about how he dives to save shots to me.

I think some posters are reading too much into what worked against Chesterfield and conversely what didn’t work against Salford and Gillingham. In my view they were all very similar performances, we got a bit lucky against Chesterfield ( they should have been 2-0up) we were unlucky against Gillingham and Salford. I don’t see the relevance of mcentee or Josh Gordon not playing yesterday, they seem to suit our style perfectly to an extent. I don’t see the relevance of mcentee as an 8 perhaps you can point me to which of our three goals were the result of beautifully crafted passes. However I can point you your three goals which were all the result of aggressive strong play.

I trust in Sadler and think he knows better than you.

What’s needed for next season is a separate debate.

ROK is god like tbh

Have heard a rumour thst ROK had been away on an extended break, whether that coincides with our recnt bad form or not I dunno

Far better managers than Sadler fall into the trap of playing players out of position. Since Pep came on the scene and tried reinventing football, more and more seem to want to overcomplicate football.

One of the best managers of all time, Brian Clough was very much about getting players to do what they are good at and not trying to do what they aren’t. I suppose Sir Ray had the same principles that lead to the success he had with us too.

The lineup we started with yesterday was the best we have available I would say, you could argue for McEntee being in as a centre back, which he actually ended up coming on as and did very well. Just stick with that and tweak it slightly if needed because of injuries. 15 games to go. Keep it simple and do what we do best, and all will end well for us.

Because he isn’t, too slow on the ball. But as a ball carrying/passing defender, he is pretty decent

Yep - he’s very good as one of the three centre halves.

Let’s hope this silly experiment with him in there ends finally now. Saft few weeks with it.

Brian Clough converted Kenny Burns from a striker to a centre back

Don’t know how that fits into your anecdote but it’s true.

Both of them hardly kicked a ball during our fantastic first half of the season.

I was told that he has picked the team, given the pre match and half time talk, decided who and when the subs were made in every one of our victories this season.
Apparently, he was at home watching the wrestling, or as you say, having a few days away golfing on every occasion that we have lost.
I’m surprised that the owners haven’t picked up on it tbh.

In Sadler we trust. Not fussed if they don’t play either.

Just before my time, but I’d bet it was because he thought that suited what he could do best.

Is the same not true for mcentee and Gordon when Sadler picks them given our style.

I mean they’re not going to recreate Brazil 1970 at any point but they will give the opposition and their defenders a hell of a tough time

I can see why McEntee gets used in midfield at times, although it is clear when watching him he is a centre back playing in midfield.

If you can’t see the difference between Harrison and Gordon, then I don’t know what to say. Harrison is better at what Josh Gordon gets in the team for and also has a football brain to go with it. The difference is huge and without a doubt has a big knock-on effect on how the team performs.

You were comparing recent performances to Saturday in one of your posts, I just cant’ agree. Most of our best performances we have been at our best in the second half, and Saturday we were back to that, levels above how we have been playing for a while.

I bet out of all our striking options - Josh Gordon would be the one opposition defenders would be happy playing against the most.

He’s a non league player - running about a lot doesn’t mean you’re effective.

Agree

Ok accept your point, it would be interesting to know the answer to that.

But presumably you are taking the stance that Sadler doesn’t know what he is doing? He must have good reasons for playing Josh gordon

No, I think it’s favouritism in part, and a bit of clouded thinking. Which is fine, I don’t think any manager makes correct decisions 100% of the time.

I personally think that’s the last we will see of Josh - I can’t for the life of me think he will be here next season if we are a league one club.

Fair enough. I would be surprised to see him play a prominent role next season too

You mix general terms to deflect specific criticisms, and then revert to specific points which support your “general terms” arguments it’s classic bar room waffle, or as I prefer to call it …. Bullshyte. If Sadler continues to pick Mcentee in midfield and busted up front, as I said the other day, it will cost us promotion and Sadler his job. Fortunately for Sadler busted is injured (again) and Mcentee is now required in defence, meaning the myriad of attacking and midfield options he has at his disposal are far more likely play in their actual positions.

I’m not quite sure what I posted that wasn’t clear. Gordon and mcentee fit how we play at league 2 level. Again I’m not unhappy if they don’t play there either. I just don’t see the reason for the negativity.
