Colchester Utd (A) February 8th, 3pm

“From haunts of coot and hern”

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

The once commonly heard announcement on railway trains was “All change … All change”, and it has a certain significance for both Walsall and Colchester Utd supporters after a busy January in the transfer market. Our dealings were heading towards an assessment of “meh” as some of the incoming were perhaps of unknown quantity, but at the end of proceedings Mat Sadler netted Ellis Harrison on loan from M K Dons for the rest of the season. A 31 year-old with experience in Leagues 1 and 2, he looks to be a well-chosen back up to Jamma, and possibly a preference as and when promotion is secured.

Colchester Utd have also had an eventful January, signing Michael Forbes (West Ham Utd), Jack Tucker (M K Dons), Tyreece Simpson (Stevenage), and on deadline day they welcomed Anthony Scully (Portsmouth), Kyreece Lisbie (Brentford), Kane Vincent-Young (Unattached) and Ken Aboh (Norwich City). Talk about a match where the players seem to have only just met each other!!

Connections between our two clubs centre mainly on the rugged frame of Roy McDonough who played and managed Colchester back in the 90’s. On the playing side they also had Mark Kinsella (father of Liam), and for the past 10 years or so Mark has been involved in coaching at Drogheda United, as well as the Irish U-21 set up.

Colchester’s current League 2 form can be described as “middling” - they sit 13th in the table but have only been beaten 7 times in 28 games. They’ve actually conceded fewer goals than us, but their 13 drawn games explain a mid-table position. Having said that, they’re on a decent run …

January 1st Swindon Town (A) Lost 3-2
January 4th Accrington Stanley (H) Lost 0-2
January 18th Bromley (A) Won 0-1
January 21st Harrogate Town (A) Drew 0-0
January 25th Morecambe (H) Won 1-0
February 1st Tranmere Rovers (A) Won 1-3

Mat Sadler’s headache for this (and future) matches would appear to be “Who gets selected to start, who gets a place on the bench, and who drops out of the squad?” He has something of an embarrassment of riches numerically speaking, and the parent clubs of our loaned players will no doubt be expecting game time rather than exclusion. What are your thoughts and preferences? Answers on a postcard please …

Prediction? Tricky, as always. Hopefully we have got over our “blip” of under-performing against Bradford City and Fleetwood - and to a certain extent Salford City, although we were rescued by our “fox in the box” who ironically may suffer from the January influx of bodies! We shall see.

I’ll go for a nervy 1-2 away win with goals by Messrs Amantchi and Wheatley.

I dont think we’ve had this many players before have we?

Possibly, Merson used something like 48 players in the relegation season but I’m not sure how many he had in any one time

Looking forward to seeing how we get on in this. Hopefully the new faces are a lift to the group and we can get back to winning ways. Would be nice if the lads had a good backing but can’t see many wanting to trek down there. I’ve done Colchester away once and it was probably the worst away I’ve ever done.

I predict an Ethan Wheatley masterclass.

We all know what a tough place the JobServe Community Stadium is to go. Ordinarily I’d happily take a point and be on our way but the superb comeback against Salford City hints at a shift in momentum and if we’re at our best I think we can squeak a narrow victory.

I’m away in Palma for the weekend with the better half but will be keeping out a keen ear for developments.

Difficult to assess this one but Colchester appear to be improving. I think a 1-1 or a 2-2 are the main possibilities. Thanks for the introduction WELSH.

Could do with getting back to winning ways, anything less then it panic stations on here going 4 games without a win

1-0 Walsall. Lakin.

Simkin

Okagbue Williams Allen

Barrett Jellis Stirk Lakin Gordon

Harrison Amantchi

Hornby
McEntee
Weir
Chang
Adomah
Wheatley
Johnson

And that’s without Matt who could be back, Asiimwe, Browne, Comley, Gordon, Maher and Lipsuic.

Ridiculous squad depth.

Deep, Deep squad full of talent and zip

I’ll be there to cheer on the lads with my daughter in tow.
Much easier journey for me than most at 1and a half hours
Park in the park and ride on the other side of the A12 from the ground for £3.00 (until7:00pm) and walk.
Parking at the ground needs to be prebooked online for £7:00

Hopefully the pitch remains in good condition as its going to be brass monkey weather.

Thats useful, I just paid to park at the ground and pre booked online last season but i’ll check that out

One change I would make would be to bring in McEntee for Okagbue in the back 3

Agree with this, maybe DJ deserves a start after his two goals with Levi but cant see Harrison not starting as he has a few days with the squad.

Im sure we havent won there away for about ten years.

I predict a 1-1 draw.

pretty much 10 years. Jan 17th 2015 where we won 2-0

Drawn 4 Lost 1 since then away against them. I’ll also go for draw.

Following a successful play during the transfer window its a 3-0 victory for us. Get in.

I didn’t realise the weather forecast was so poor. Potential for sleet and snow, certainly worth Saddlers fans thinking of making the long trip to keep an eye on weather forecasts.

I think that we will win this 2 or 3 nil
McEntee in at right side of the back three and fingers crossed that Jamma is fit.
