Connor Barrett Signs - 3 year deal

Good choice there… I can also remember Haddington and Gregg but they were not so attacking but both could defend well. Brian Taylor is probably with closest to Barrett that I can think of .

Yeah. That could be right. I’ve got my P’s mixed up. Whatever he was a brilliantly skillful full back before skill in that position was a requirement.

Barrett’s contribution numbers are fantastic so far, hoping that his 3 year deal gives us some good negotiating power if teams come in for him, rather than a Jeff B special deal

He probably wouldn’t sign it, but I’d offer him a 5 year deal on improved terms right now

Wiki says he played for Walsall, Plymouth and Preston.

I’ve also discovered Walsall had another player called Brian Taylor who played in the 50s

That all sounds right. I’m old enough to have seen the second Brian Taylor, but not the first.

I make that 8 assists so far for Connor this season.

As well as those already mentioned, Harrison, Caswell and the best of the lot, Brightwell.

Caswell must be up there. I knew a Doncaster fan who reckoned he was their best right back, and he wasnt there long before moving to Leeds

That’s true. Harrison was one of those players whose versatility meant he never got got his deserved recognition in any of the positions he played.

We did he was the player who played for us just before Colin Taylor arrived. I saw him play a few games .I think he went to Birmingham City. A nippy winger who could cross a good ball.

How could I forget Harrison and Caswell.? I suppose the former played so well in so many positions that I had forgotten his stint at RB. Caswell was a very good player too who was very good in numerous positions but think he should be regarded as one of our best RBs.

One of the best signings made by this club in many years, real difference maker to what the team has been missing after Bennett was recalled in Jan 2023.

If you want 3 at the back to really work you need wing back threats on both sides. Allen emerging as a ball playing CB of good quality out of nowhere also made a huge difference in last year.

Credit to whoever scouted Barrett.

Barrett reminds me of the impact Demetriou made in 15/16. That was another guy who never played championship and was mainly lower league player but he fitted the formation perfectly that season especially when Rico played the other side.

Shame it was the commute issues as he went back down to play for Southend and ended up in non league a few years later.

McCarthy was also good the following season.

Cracking performance again today!!!

Caswell was an amazing player but I think Andy Dornan deserves a mention. He and Forbes arrived from Motherwell and were key members of the centenary season which probably gave me my happiest memories as a Saddlers supporter.

All of them were very good, but I think Taylor was the best. He was a victim of Mackay’s cull, but in this case Macken wasn’t as a disastrous replacement as some of the others Mackay made. Disastrous was replacing Nick Atthey with Henry Newton, and George Andrews with Alf Wood . Cronyism, pure and simple.

Agree with all of that. Macken was a decent player but not one of the all time bests in my mind.

Am i the only one who’s to young to know who any of these right backs are lol
Goes to show we have had no one’s class on many years
