Connor Barrett Signs - 3 year deal

Macken was a very good defender, but all I remember about him going forward was him continually slicing his crosses in front of the near post. But not the worst replacement. In contrast, employing Newton was a bit of a disgrace. He’d been diagnosed with an arthritic hip before he even signed. Sad for him, but it didn’t give him an automatic right to pick up a wage from Walsall.

He gave an interview after he retired. His justification for continuing playing was that he was in pain whatever he did, so why not continue trying to play professionally. It didn’t make any more sense then than it does now.

Ian Paul well worth a mention when considering very good right backs - would have had a really good career but for illness.

Best thing about Barrett is he is also class defensively and good in the air as he is tall…
He really has it all

Yes. He did start out as a full back. TBH Ian Paul was so near the complete player, he could have played anywhere.

Newton wasn’t quite Ken Armstrong but not far off. Agree on Macken.

Ian Paul was a central midfielder?

Has anyone mentioned Andy Dornan?

He is certainly showing a lot class and composure when on the ball outside / on the edge of the opposition box. Both goals he was directly involved with today, he was patient, commited their player before skinning them (think he megged the first one!) or seeing the run of Hall and playing a lovely little ball into his path!
Didn’t rush, panic, just used the ball well.
A great signing for us and we’ll probably need to get promoted this season to keep him.

Sure he started as a right back. Good player.

I agree with the last bit

Can’t remember a time when we have taken a clutch of non league players that have slotted into league football so well - with Barrett, Jellis and Williams all looking to be of really good quality.

Excellent recruitment.

Thought we were discussing right backs , apologies if not.

Ian Brightwell wasn’t too bad.

It’s what we’ve been crying out for, for years. Follow the Peterborough model. Not all of them will come off, but for those that do, we now (hopefully) have owners who will hold out for their true value when it comes to them moving on.

Barrett Showed a lot of composure today which is a great attribute especially when moving up the leagues

Also noticed not for the first time how much strength he has .
Anyone notice how he held the defender off by the corner flag

I noticed against Leicester he was a match athletically and physically for premier league players theres not many at this level that can say that.
