Crewe Alexandra (H) Nov 9th, 3pm

"Half a League, Half a League, Half a League downwards
Into Division IV drop Crewe Alexandra"

R. C. Churchill (with apologies to Alfred, Lord Tennyson)

After the excitement and elation of F A Cup weekend it’s back to the grind of League 2 as we welcome the Alex. The two clubs were founder members of League Division II in 1892, but regular meetings became a thing of the past after the formation of Divisions III (South) and (North) except for the odd seasons when we were shoved into the Northern section purely for geographical logic. Back in the 1950’s when I first started supporting Walsall, we were the “Cinderella” of Division III (South) while Crewe were held in similar regard in III (North). Indeed, they managed to finish bottom of that table in the three consecutive seasons prior to the creation of Division IV referred to in the opening quotation.

Crewe’s fortunes saw a huge improvement under the management of Dario Gradi, who steered them to the heights of what is now the Championship in the late 1990’s. One of his most astute signings was Clayton Ince, who forms the basis of a strong goalkeeping connection between the two clubs. It’s interesting to note that he reportedly only signed for Crewe after a successful trial with Wrexham, but Wrexham couldn’t afford to offer him a contract - how times change! He made 123 appearances for Crewe and went on to feature 152 times for us. The other goalkeeping connection is “masked marvel” Freddie Barber, who has been Crewe’s head goalkeeping coach for the past 9 years.

Looking at Crewe’s current League 2 form it should be borne in mind that they are 5th in the table only 2 points behind us, so this could be far from easy - they’ve only conceded 12 goals in their 13 League 2 games so far (we’ve let in 14, but much of that was down to the Fleetwood blip)…

28 September Newport County (A) LOST 2-1
5 October Gillingham (H) Won 2-0
12 October Doncaster Rovers (A) Drew 1-1
19 October Salford City (H) Drew 1-1
22 October Fleetwood Town (A) Won 0-1
26 October Tranmere Rovers (H) Won 3-1

A home win in this game will obviously keep us in the automatic promotion section of League 2, although we can’t get back to the top of the pile just yet as we’re 4 points behind Port Fail (but we do have a game in hand). However, Fail are away at current basket case Gillingham, and it’s about time the Gills started playing again!

Prediction? Our ability to score goals this season has been very comforting, and in the light of the fact that we’ve scored 10 more goals than the Alex (26 against 16 for them) I reckon a 2-1 win isn’t far removed from a realistic fantasy!!

I agree with your prediction. 2-1 will do…thanks again for the introduction.

Crewe have sold 450 for Saturday so far:

With their league position and the relatively short distance to travel, I’d expect them to sell the away end out, which is 1500ish? Mind ya, I’m pretty sure they only brought 700 odd down a few years ago when they went up and were top of the league at the time

Was in a queue for 6 mins booking a ticket for Saturday.

Something special is happening at our club

454 so far. Well on the way to the largest ever Crewe following at Bescot. Respect.

Was thinking last week that this will be an extremely tough game, but then we outplay another big team from the division above and it feels like we can beat anyone.

A nice 2-0 would be a fantastic result.

Careful mate, they will have a sprinkling of Crewe yoof ultras, my legs are wobbling at the thought.

Pathetic they’ve always had a shit following. I don’t even think they sold out in the play off game against us. Hate these with a passion

One slight concern is Harry Williams unavailable for Saturday.
He has been absolutely immense and constantly putting in 8/10 performances
Hope Donevan Daniel’s can step up after little game time . I do actually think he is better in the centre of a 3 though and it suits him more with organizing as he is very much a talker .

By train, it looks like the Chase line will have a lot of extra passengers on Saturday (change at Rugeley for services from and to Crewe). I might come by car.

I do worry about our defence with Harry out, Daniels is obviously very experienced but i don’t see him making them last ditch body on the line tackles that harry makes.

I agree with you.H has been immense for us. DD will be desperate to take this chance though and re establish himself. What worries me is if he tries too hard.

What about Okagbue to the middle and McEntee on the right?

Was about to post this, but i think he will go with DD

DD and Oisin would be starters at most L2 clubs. Brilliant to have such strength in depth to come in for injuries / suspensions.
Think we will stuff them 3-0

This will be tight, but I think we may just steal a win. If we do then I think it strengthens belief that we really may challenge for automatic promotion rather than the playoffs. 3-2 to the Soar Away Saddlers!

This will be Minidude’s 1st live game so you can guarantee 1 of 2 things. Either;

  1. Bore 0-0 draw putting her off for life, or
  2. 1-0 Walsall with the only goal being scored while I’m taking her to the toilet!
She loves a good sing-a-long tho, so lets hope the family stand is rockin!
