D 0-0 vs Accrington Stanley (H) – Sat 24th Jan, 3.00pm (League Two)

The Saddlers welcome Accrington Stanley to the Bescot.

The Opposition

Back on the 27th September 2025 we beat Accrington 3-1 at the Wham Stadium with Aden Flint, Aaron Pressley and Albert Adomah on the scoresheet. Accrington were 19th in the table after that game but have since improved slightly and now sit in 16th.

The Proposition

After a 4 game losing streak, the Saddlers finally bounced back last game with a 3-1 away win at Tranmere. Priestley Farquharson, Daniel Kanu and Jamille Matt found the net before Tranmere scored a 90th minute consolation. With a much better performance as well as result, Walsall will be looking to do the same against Accrington and keep the pressure on Swindon and Bromley at the top of the table.

In contrast Accrington were on a 3 game winning streak before losing their last game 2-0 at home to MK Franchise.

The First Time

The first meeting between the sides, was in League Two on 21st October 2006 which resulted in a 2-1 away win for the Saddlers.

The Last Time

The Saddlers last meeting with Accrington was a 3-1 away win in League Two on the 27th September last year.

The Worst Time

We’ve lost to them 2-1 on 3 occasions, all away, in 2009 (League Cup) and 2019 & 2023 (League Two).

The Best Time

The 3-1 away win which was our last meeting was also the best result for us.

Played for both

George Bowerman plays as a forward for Cradley Town.

He began his career with Walsall, and had spent brief periods with non-League clubs Redditch United and Woking before joining Accrington Stanley in October 2013. He would go on to further to a further loan with Stourbridge before leaving Accrington for Altrincham in 2015. Over the next few years he then played for AFC Telford United, Stafford Rangers, Halesowen Town, Rushall Olympic, Hinckley AFC, Market Drayton Town and Quorn before moving to Cradley Town in 2019.

Walsall

Bowerman was born in Sedgley, West Midlands, and came through the Walsall youth academy to sign professional forms with the club in summer 2010. In February 2011, he joined Conference North club Redditch United on loan to gain first team experience. Despite not featuring for the Saddlers in 2010–11, he was given a new six-month contract at the end of the season.

He made his Walsall debut at the Bescot Stadium on 9 August 2011, replacing Ryan Jarvis 81 minutes into a 3–0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the League Cup. He scored his first professional goal after coming on as a substitute in a 4–2 home defeat to Bury on 19 November. Bowerman began 2012–13 with six goals from eleven games, but scored only once more in the remainder of the season, and was released.

Accrington Stanley

After playing twice for Woking in the Conference, Bowerman joined League Two club Accrington Stanley in October 2013 until the end of the season. He was then loaned out to Stourbridge in 2014 where he played 9 games, scoring 3 goals. He left Accrington for Altrincham in 2015.

Also:

Aaron Pressley, Jack Nolan, Bertrand Bossu, Rod McDonald, Anthony Gerrard, Mark Hughes, Jack Rose…

Comment if you know any more!!!

Lump On

With Daniel Kanu continuing his scoring form and Jamille Matt and Albert Adomah contributing in recent games, you’d hope our strike force is up to the task of adding some more goals.

Lump Off

Our overall record against them is slightly in their favour, W4/D1/L5, which includes the dreadful home loss at the end of last season which contributed to us missing out on promotion.

We do owe them one. For me, the Worst Time was last year.

Yeah, that last home game against them took it out of our hands.
Even with that last minute Bradford goal, a draw against Crewe would have probably been enough if we hadn’t screwed up against Accrington the week before.

An equaliser against Accrington would have been enough

Great preview Steve.
The referee for this one is Elliott Swallow from Lancashire. Mr Swallow is a newbie referee, this will be only his fifth EFL league game although he has officiated a Walsall FC game already this season, the home 0-0 Vertu Trophy game in October against Chelsea U21 in which we won the penalty shoot out 4-2.
As far as I can see he has not yet officiated an Accrington game, maybe due to his Fylde Coast location.
Lets see how this one goes.

Gone for a home win, hoping for a few more goals again and feel defence can hold firm so 3:0 to the Saddlers. Anything less than 3 pts, however they come will be a concern, would like to see same midfield set up as Tranmere, with Clarke being used at that impact sub to finish off the opposition in the second half. Would like to see Richard’s involved in the squad too …

They seem to have been a bogey team to us in recent seasons, last years home defeat virtually lost us our eventual place in the top three, it was a blow similar to Bradford’s injury time winner (that Pattison seemed to like so much).

Home win in the rain, hopefully.

It won’t be far from that but I am not sure we will leave Adomah, Lakin and Comley all out of the squad.

See this as a battling performance that we come out the wrong side of. I’m often wrong

Always annoying opponents for us.

1-1 draw

Home win for sure.

A romping 6-1 victory.

Kanu x 3

Richards x 2

Pattison x 1

Presuming everyone is fit from Saturday I think we’ll go with the same starting line up, with possibly Burke and Hancock to return to the bench. I’d personally maybe swap Comley put for Lakin to give us a bit more attacking impetus in the deeper role given we’re at home

Whatever the lineup I can see this being a difficult encounter. I hope we come flying out of the blocks and build up a healthy lead by half time.

Struggling to see anything other than a comprehensive home romp. Bouncing back to winning ways at Tranmere was huge for me and I back us to follow it up in style back at the Palglet-Track.

Looking at the online ticket sales, slightly dissapointing audience by the looks of it particularly given the excellent ticket offer by the club for this and the forthcoming game against Creepy Crawley. Still it feels like it’s been a lifetime since our last home game so anticipation will be high and the Undercroft will be rocking.

The group are in extremely rude health as Sadler has alluded to.
