D 3-3 vs Newport County (A) - League Two - Fri 20th Oct, 7:45pm

My God what a night that was. We got stuck in fog and got there at half-time by which point it was 0-2, watched 20 minutes of the second half by which point it was 0-4. So we left with a view to getting back for last orders, only to get stuck in fog again so didn’t get home until midnight.

Didnt we play Merthyr Tydfil on a Friday Night once?

Think it was when merson was in charge. Vaguely recall rumours about David Seaman turning up to play for us.

I’m sure Gillingham away late 80’s was Friday night
4-0 down at half time .
The days when I used to get free tickets from Nicky cross !!

We beat them on a Friday night at their place in our promotion season 1997/98. We also played Southend away on a Friday night the same season and drew 1-1 I think it was.

Visits to Rodney Parade are always tough and uncompromising affairs and Friday nights will be no different in that respect. Good sides, those that make the playoffs have the ability to follow up wonderful home romps with gritty away results and that’s what we need to show now. As glorious and memorable as the Gillingham game was it won’t mean a lot.

Still on a luxury cruise so will be missing this one unfortunately but I’ll be backing the lads from afar.

I thought Britannia had been decommissioned? :ship:

Three points from this one as we go on a semi streak.

Yeah i lived in Manchester when we played colchester, had to leave ten mins before the end to get the train back into London, could only get back as far as wolverhampton had to hang about there for a few hours and got in about 8am the Saturday morning.

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss much, a nice comfortable win considering we had ten men for 70 odd minutes. After the dismissal Tom Bennett dropped back to centre half and was excellent, iirc.
One memory is that I think that was the game at Layer Road when they had just sold LuaLua to Newcastle and hadn’t had time to spend the money on replacing him. The Walsall fans regularly sang “where’s LuaLua oooh arr, where’s LuaLua oooh arr” throughout the game.

What is the reason for this being on a Friday evening rather than a Saturday?

Gsme of rugby there on Saturday.

I’ve got mixed up
It was Thursday 1st Jan 1987 when we lost 4-0 at gills .

I was a child at the time but I always think of newport county and the 8000 fans they bought to fellows park for the final game of the 80 81 season I think???

There is a Clubhouse at the ground (inside the home main entrance) which admits away supporters who promise to be well behaved. Next door to the clubhouse is a hot food area which was doing a steady trade on my visit. There is also a small Fan Zone, but this tends to be more for home supporters. Inside the away section there is also a Fan Zone facility which contains a bar serving draught beers.

Generally, the area around the ground is not particularly great, with the nearest pub, the Victoria Hotel on Corporation Road looking particularly uninviting. A little further along Corporation Road is the Excelsior Club which does allow in away fans, shows televised sports and is family friendly (see below). There is a quite superb Wetherspoon pub on Chepstow Road called the Godfrey Morgan. This spacious pub is only a 10 minute walk from the away turnstiles and for some unknown reason on my visit seemed to have few home fans in attendance given how good it was. The pub has the added benefit that along Chepstow Road there are a number of food outlets including a couple of fish and chip shops and a fabulous Greggs Bakery. Otherwise, the city centre is a 10-15 minute walk away where there are plenty of pubs to be found including three more Wetherspoons outlets. Two of these the John Wallace Linton in Cambrian Road and the Queen’s Hotel in Bridge Street are located quite close to the railway station.

We did indeed. I went, a grim place is Merthyr. It was an FA Cup tie and we had Steve Staunton in defence. Plus there was a streaker late in the game if my memory serves me correctly

Had a decent game to but Ince came straight back in who was phenomenal for us that season.

Do you have to disembark at every lock gate to help or do you send the butler to attend the manual task.

Crowd was around 9000 that day so not as many as 8000 Newport fans, though it seemed like it as they won 4-2 and big pitch invasion at the end. They needed to win to get promoted if I remember correctly and we may have had a shot at the title if we won and other results went our way. But being Walsall…
