D 3-3 vs Newport County (A) - League Two - Fri 20th Oct, 7:45pm

Off topic but do Deeley’s Castings have any connection to Norman Deeley who used to play for Wolves?

He was a Wednesbury lad so I suppose it is possible he was some kind of relation. I don’t think Deeley is that common a name, I’ve never known anyone by that nomenclature so maybe he is but he wasn’t an heir to the family fortune afaik.

That was their first ever promotion.

We needed to better Huddersfields result, but they won and we lost. Newport were in the top four but weren’t certain of promotion and as it turned out they would have stayed down if they had lost because Pompey won.
We were seven or eight points clear with eight games to go but cocked it up.

Interesting the comment says they bought 8000

My wife met some relatives of Norman Deeley through her work. They told her that Cat Deeley is also part of the same family as Norman, second or third cousin I think. Don’t know about Deeley’s Castings though but didn’t the name look magnificant emblazoned across those blue away shirts, especially under floodlights.

Yeah, I went to that one too.

The promotion season we played them on the Friday night in the league, won 1-0. Paul Jones pen I think it was. We played them in the F.A Cup at their place around the same time, a few weeks before I think, that was the game Freddie Barber put the window through with a clearance.

I remember that Tranmere game well, went by coach from Bescot. I was 17 or 18. My mate was working as an apprentice at the time and he got caught in traffic back from work and missed the coach :joy:

Ended up going on me own and walking back home from by The Bell in Bloxwich.

Cat Deeley off the telly.

I don’t know who that is.

I’d keep it that way if I was you

OK then. :slightly_smiling_face:

I do Newport every year. I’m actually buzzing that it’s a Friday night. Day off work, trip to the brewery, hotel booked, at least it’s different to your standard “sit on a train and go home disappointed Saturday” which are usually our away days :joy:

Reecey got sent off that day. He came on as sub and for some reason the Ref seemed to take a dislike to him - they seemed to have words as he came onto the pitch. Booked for nothing not long after, and then, right in front of us he caught the ball as it went out of play. Second booking and he was off. It was clear to everyone around us that the ball was already out of play when he caught it.

That and the implosion at Wigan lost us the title. Wigan, I remember, suckered us with a guard of honour as we came onto the pitch having already won promotion. We were too busy patting ourselves on the back than to win the game. Clever!

Not only that, but the ball was up way over his head and there wasn’t a Newport player near him, so he was in no way seeking to gain an advantage. It was shocking refereeing.

Oteh out of action for a bit

8,000 Newport fans? In a crowd of 9,251. I don’t think so.

My main memory of that game, apart from ending the first promotion season I had experienced, was how much shredded newspaper (Argentina 78 style) was thrown in the air as the players came out for kick off. I felt a twinge of guilt about someone having to clear it up as I may have contributed some from my own pockets. :hushed:

I remember the game well . Maybe 2,000 from South Wales. We were off it having won promotion.

I’ve always thought the foul for his first booking was actually made by Waddington.
