D 3-3 vs Newport County (A) - League Two - Fri 20th Oct, 7:45pm

Was it 79/80 season as that was my first season supporting Walsall?

Could have been. I was a small boy. All the papers say 8000 newport were there but there can’t have been like others have said. Some fantastic memories at Fellows park

In this article it mentions 8000 but I would be surprised if it is accurate.

Definitely not as the home areas were packed too - probably 2-3k Newport and 6k walsall

It went off big style outside the ground, they had some hard lads, me and about 4 of my mates were lined up outside the ground, after being involved in a fracas when a coach load of them got off outside the street end
And one of the officers involved said " we have got you banged to rights lads, we only need them to identify you" and started laughing
At that they bought the Newport lads over and said with a grin " is this them lads?" to which the Newport lads said (who we had just been rolling on the floor with) " no it wasn’t them" :joy: :joy: :joy:
The look on the coppers faces were priceless :joy: we ended up shaking hands and thanking the Newport lads  what comradery

I used to work with David Plant, Robert Plant’s cousin. He was a big Newport fan and had a story about that day, basically every bus in Newport was booked out. He’d been to every game that season and turned up at his local social club where there were buses and mini buses parked outside with people jumping on the band wagon. Story went he got on a mini bus and an hour into the journey stopped at some other social club in even deeper Wales, turned out he’d got on the darts teams minibus and ended up at their away fixture. Also if anyone that went to mob lane/shelfield comp in the 80s and remember Andy Collins who became headmaster long after I left, he came to school as a young teacher with a whopping shiner the Monday after having gone in the enclosure raised terrace next to the tunnel thinking he’d be safe. He wasn’t even a football fan but went with loads of his mates from his home town, he always hated Walsall after that, remember him virtually growling when we beat Arsenal in 83. Happy days, as for the crowd, there weren’t 8000 Newport fans on planet earth in 1980 yet alone in Fellows Park, they brought about 3 to 4 k and the official crowd was brought to the world by Ken Wheldons famous abacus, it was more likely 12 kish by my reckoning. The official crowds against Pompey and Huddersfield were equally laughable that season.

Think that was season Huddersfield came in the Street End, from what i remember they weren’t in there very long  And yes about 3-4k Newport for last match sounds about right.

Injury prevention at this club is dire

Happens to the best of them too.

Does this make him a candidate for a future thread about ‘When’s Neymar joining?’

Had to find this

A new broom needs to sweep through the club

Went to the 5-0 defeat at Northampton. Also seem to remember a game at York towards the end of the season in the early 90’s. Lost 1-0 and i think Peter Skipper got stretchered off after about 45 seconds

Newport 2 Walsall 2 in front of a paying audience of 3223 with a total attendance of 3235

I’ll be heading down about 3, hopefully the weather doesn’t cause any issues, an awful lot of rain forecast!

I’m down in South Wales for the weekend anyway, although unfortunately still about 2 hours from Newport over in Pembrokeshire. If it does get rained off I hope they make the call early and save me the trip.

It’s never unfortunate to be in Pembrokeshire.
