Darrell Clarke confirmed as manager

I think this looks like a positive appointment and shows that they are desperate to get back up again. They must know that he needs to be backed to do that so I am Optimistic.

This makes the new season exciting again after the disaster with the last one.

Great appointment. My Gas mates said he was the best manager they ever had. Iā€™m sure heā€™ll be given the same sort of budget Graydon, Money and Smith were.

Would like to see him getting his own staff in, this lot have made us look very unprofessional.

I also hope he decides just to release most of the squad, not because they got us relegated but because it frees up the wages to do what he wants.

Good god Jeff - youā€™ve gone and employed a bloke with passion and drive who can immediately connect with the fans - lets hope you back him properly!!

Darrellā€™s quote to the BBC:

"I want to give these brilliant fans something to shout about, put a smile on their faces and give them a team that will give their all for the club and the badge.

ā€œI know all about the division we are in, Iā€™ve had success at League Two level before and I want to bring the good times back. I will work tirelessly to achieve our shared goals.ā€

A fantastic appointment for you Saddlers. As a few of you have commented he is a winner.

With DC each game is treated as a project so you never know what you might getā€¦so heā€™ll spot something he can exploit in the opposition and select his team accordingly. If it ainā€™t working or the players ainā€™t doing it on pitch he will change things early onā€¦like two substitutions before half time.

Heā€™s also very aware of what how the opposition are changing things to alter the course of a match and respond accordingly.

This is so depressingā€¦the Gas are stuck with GC and you guys now have DC. What ever happens next season at Bescot it wonā€™t be dull.

What system does he like to play colonel

Trust me - he will need to work wonders. Working with the tiny budget is what got him the job. Thatā€™'s fact. He will have a low-end of League 2 playing budget. Lower than last season and about 60% of what ā€œotherā€ managers in the frame wanted to work with. There was also another last minute manager in the frame who was lots cheaperā€¦ thank goodness we ended up with Clarke!

Sounds like a good appointment to me - as long as there is enough budget to get new and decent players - otherwise it will be the same old story.

I just hope we see some movement in the right direction.

He likes to use over lapping full backs, Danny Leadbetter has not been offered a contract at Rovers so as well as The Beard and Lines DL would be a good addition Gavin.

He is a good tactician so as said previously sometimes you never know what to expect, each game is a project.

He also does better at getting the best outta young lower league players than those that have been around for a while.

I think you guys will enjoy the creativity and honesty DC will bring to WFC, it maybe division two but my guess is it will be more fun with an enjoyable brand of football than youā€™ve experienced of late.

Very pleased with the appointment. From what Iā€™ve seen from interviews n various you tube videos. He seems passionate, hard working, and a very honest person, and comes across has a genuine nice blokeā€¦and doesnā€™t come out with a load cliches which from past managers gets very boring listening to same dribble in post n pre match interviews. which will also be a positive in the dressing roomā€¦ fingers crossed he will get the backing of mr bonser. If so the future will be bright and get an extra 1k fans through the gateā€¦ upthesaddlers

How do you know about other L2 budgets?

We will be one of the better supported clubs in L2, particularly if we are doing OK.

Because a reporter said we had a mid league two budget and of course he must be right and must know exactly what budgets other teams have.

To be fair, it may well be true. Swindon are a mid table league two team and I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they did have a similar or even bigger budget. The fact is that there are more than a handful of teams in league two who will have bigger budgets than most of the bottom half of league one. Thatā€™s just the way it is.

Whatā€™s that based on? Certainly not recent history.

And the figures from last season.

And if we are serious about promotion from League Two our budget needs to match theirs. Simple.

Not sure if you are a troll to be honest?

To know the things that you claim to know, you would need to be an employee of the club or such like. One with access to confidential information.

Our playing budget is tiny in comparison to other League 2 teams. Notts C. got relegated from the FL with a playing budget twice what ours will be next season. Make of that what you will.

Quite simply, weā€™re not going to because a) some of them are bigger than us, in terms of support or financial backing and b) some of them are habitual overspenders, making losses every year, and weā€™re not going to do that.

Realistically, we need to be, in terms of budget, 6th to 12th in the division and then have a better manager, and use our resources better, than the teams in places 1 to 6.

If we are doing well, our attendances will average over 5k across the season. That will put us in the top 7/8 in the division.

The stagnation in L1 has caused many to stop bothering. Success, even in L2 will bring a few hundred back, particularity if Clarke is as good as the Rovers fans say he is working with a tight budget.

Are we seriously going to swallow that crap again? Ohh ā€œbigger than usā€. By what metric? Weā€™ve been in a higher league than most of them for the recent history. Weā€™ve made more profit and probably paid more rent than most of them. Itā€™s about time it was put in to the club.

Iā€™m also sick of the excuse mongering that it was only a reporters say so on the budget so hereā€™s what Transfermarkt reckons:

Shock horror puts us bang in the middle of League Two.

Probably not to the penny accurate but probably not far off.

If we can assemble, in my opinion what was the best team in league one that season a few years ago, Iā€™m sure we can do similar in league 2 with a credible manager like Clarke and players buying into the fact weā€™re trying to bounce back straight into league 1

I get what people are saying about budgets and the rest of it but all we can do is back the manager, especially when a ball hasnā€™t even been kicked yet

Which emphasises the point that budget ainā€™t everything.
