Who’s even out there that could be a Director of football here anyway? It’s not a position I’m up on to be honest.
It seems like quite a small group of people who would.
A. Tick all the boxes on the job description.
B. Not want to be the actual manager/head coach.
C.Be willing to work for what we can afford to pay.
Let’s see what Leigh comes up with but I’m slightly sceptical…and if a candidate is found who can do all the required needs of the club…just make him the manager anyway.
Have we time and money not to have a football director, sporting director or whatever name this position would be? Soon the difference between league clubs and non league clubs could be if there is such a person, or not. I know it can make traditional managers obsolete, but football is changing. Few years ago video referees or magic spray were seen as kind of an aberration. Now it is something normal. Earlier video recordings of training or set pieces routines looked like a fantasy, now it is something normal in many clubs. Now it’s hard to imagine a football club without a person responsible only for football matters and nothing else. Of course the problem could lie what he will be exactly responsible for, but all details should be ironed out in the recruitment process. I know, same people who hired for example Dean Keates or DC will be responsible for hiring new football director, but I’m crossing my fingers it will be right this time. I even say, with such person, relegation from League One wouldn’t be so realistic, as it was two years ago. And who knows, DC would never be hired for example. I think it’s a risk worth taking, even if it takes a few seasons to make it click.
A fee names probably way above what we would be prepared to to pay but here goes Lee Carsley, Chris Powell, Neil Harris
David Kelly was at the ground today with Pomlett and Mole might not be anything in it but he was there.
He may have been one of many applying for the job?
I can see him getting it. Wouldn’t be a bad shout
Darrell Powell is head coach of Castleford tigers lol, do you mean Chris powell
I do
Port Vale have a Director of Football…and a manger with badges. How’s it going there?
I was happy to give Dutton time, that is until Friday’s dog’s dinner of a performance…and his awful post match interview. The defeat was incredibly damaging and his lack of awareness frightening.
At the end of the day, Dutton will still pick the team and set them up. I don’t see a DoF changing that.
I’ve heard from a reliable source that Kelly was at the ground today to sign a two year deal has a replacement for Adebayo to be our new number 9.
A director of football isn’t there to pick the squad, but it does mean you don’t have a manager per se, but a head coach instead.
A DoF usually would take care of recruitment in conjunction with the Head Coach, but the Head Coach is there to pick the team and coach them more than anything else.
I don’t agree.BD would surely listen to the views of a wise older head!! At the moment there is no one in the club who has managed a team at this level. Part of the role of the DoF is also to mentor the first team coach. I am sure that with the right person in the role the partnership could work well.
Luckily for us Dean Smith can be pointed to as a shining example of how the club can be seen as a stepping stone to greater things.
DC less so, but…
We need someone who has been a manager, has contacts in the game, and can attract players to the club. There is no point taking someone who has never managed in League 1 or 2.
Someone like Keith Hill, Kenny Jackett, Sean O’Driscoll.
But I expect it to be between David Kelly, James Shan, Paul Tisdale, and Nigel Adkins.
I’d like Keith Downing or Richard O’Kelly.
Which is what BD is doing now and not exactly covering himself in glory is he!!
…more like a frying pan than a stepping stone for DC.
He was mentioned a few weeks back as more of a running joke whenever there was manager vacancy but I actually think Ian Atkins would be a decent short term pick for next 18 months.
You want to appoint someone who’s done being a manager or at least has no ambition to be one as worst thing you could do is appoint one and have the head coach (Dutton and then whoever it is next season) thinking the DOF is just going to take their job before too long so no trust between the two.
I actually wonder what the relationship actually is between Clarke and Flitcroft up at V*le as he was managing someone fairly recently so I reckon a bit of tension there before too long.
Anyway Ian Atkins last managed in 2006 at Torquay where apparently he turned down the DOF role. Since then he’s been a scout for many premier league clubs and think he’s Midlands based.
With the situation now you need someone with a good contacts book not just U.k but in europe as the current strategy is very limited.
Said before I loved the Paul Taylor era where amongst a few poor picks there were loads of brilliant random discoveries so even if it was a bit dodgy it improved the club on the pitch hugely and that needs to happen again given a few at this level still do it.
If the club don’t want to get an experienced head in as the actual coach (and the job spec pretty much confirms it) and LP prefers to go with young coach then i’d like the DOF to be of that ilk.
Important I think aswell the club appoint as next head coach someone who’s worked with DOF in the past. I know Exeter had one in the past with Steve Perryman although Paul Tidsdale dosen’t really fit the young up and coming coach criteria anymore. Would still be happy with him though.
