Director of Football

I see Lee Bowyer has resigned at Charlton today. Clearly fancies the Walsall role

I think Leigh deserves credit for acting quickly he’s seen that we are dropping like a stone so has bought forward his plans to appoint a director of football.I just hope is admiration for Brian Dutton doesn’t bite him in the backside but now it’s time to chill out and relax a little bit and see where the next few weeks take us.

I’m not convinced. Don’t think this is the correct use of resources for a club in the 4th tier of English football.
Football at this level is simple. Keep the tactics simple, play in form players in their natural positions & the results will follow. No DOF required. Get into League 1 first, then think about it.
All BD needs is an experienced head to show him the ropes & that should be a short-term appointment.
After all, Port Fail’s DOF has worked wonders for them…

Michael Johnson, former Birmingham City defender and current England U21 Coach is very keen on the role.

He took Guyana to the Gold Cup in the recent past which is some achivement.

Here’s a recent article about him - https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/michael-johnson-england-under-21s-guyana-gold-cup-manager-759545

Vivash’s only position as manager was in 2007 when he took charge of Cirencester town at the end of the 2006/7 season. He got them relegated and resigned in September 2008 to look after the Chelsea U12’s.

Heading for Bluenoses

Oh, of course. Poor Lee Bowyer. First he has to deal with the Charlton owners, then he’ll have to deal with the Blues ones.

Yes but the job is wider than supporting BD (important as that is) and includes overseeing the Academy, the signing of players and overseeing scouting activities.Looks to me like that the Club is recognising some past mistakes and is looking ahead.Surely we can all back that! People have been crying out for change and this is a good first step in my opinion.

I’d have preferred us to bring in an actual manager first to be honest. Couldn’t really care less about a DoF.

Tbf I think both were required. An assistant to support bri and a dof

For the future it could be good, once we’re back in League 1, to have a DOF to plot our way into the Championship. I just don’t think that now, when we’re in a dogfight at the arse end of League 2, is the right time for this.
I just hope that the club doesn’t rush this appointment.

People will grasp at any solution though. Now it’s a director of football.

The titles are irrelevant, it’s people with actually know how coming into a club that’s important. If that’s a DoF great but I’m way more interested in who it actually is and what they actually propose and if it’s impressive, make them ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  manager we haven’t got one :man_shrugging:

I know they are dead trendy, but the DoF at Port Vale has just looked at Darrell Clarke treading water with Walsall in mid table and though ā€œhmm great appointmentā€ so I won’t be dancing in the streets just yet.

I agree. I hope it’s intended as long-term rather than just acting as stabilisers for Dutton. Smith appears to have been a de facto DoF, but apart from him ,we’ve been without someone who can bridge the generic business operations and the day-to-day team stuff.

A working knowledge and understanding of the game as both a player and a manager is desirable.
Shouldn’t that be essential not desirable.

Director of Football for Exceptional Results.

Anyone seen Doffer lately?
Seems his time has come.

I suppose he’s trying to cast his net as wide as possible. Someone whose career has been spent in professional football at a decent level. Player, manager/coach/assistant/ upstairs man or any combination.

That name popped into my head as well when I read the details!

That would be a great appointment.
