Fleetwood Town (A) – Sat 13th Sept, 3.00pm (League Two)

The Saddlers travel oop north t’ Highbury Stadium, t’ face Fleetwood Town.

The Opposition

Fleetwood’s poor start of last season resulted in 1 win in 11 games and the sacking of manager Charlie Adam. Pete Wild took over in December and an indifferent 2nd half of the season led to a 14th place finish. They were however the only side to do the double over the Saddlers with a shock 6-2 win at the Bescot and a 2-0 comfortable win later in the season at Fleetwood.

The Fishermen have strengthened their squad with Will Davies (striker from Sutton Utd) and Toby Mullarkey (defender from Crawley Town). Free transfers Denver Hume (defender from Grimsby Town), Lewis McCann (striker from Dunfermline Athletic), Jordan Davies (midfielder from Wrexham), Ched Evans (striker from Preston) and James Norwood (striker from Oldham Athletic). Additionally they have loaned Ethan Ennis (midfielder from Manchester United).

The Proposition

The Saddlers look to continue their 3 match winning run in the league (all 1-0 wins) with Daniel Kanu hoping to add to his first goal of the season against Chesterfield.

Walsall will be without Charlie Lakin who was cautioned twice resulting in a red against Chesterfield.

Saddlers fans will be hoping to see the first appearance of loanee Rico Richards to see what he can bring to the attack.

Despite winning their first 2 games of the season, Fleetwood have now gone 5 league games with only 1 win. Their last outing resulted in a 1-0 loss away at Notts County, meaning they currently sit 11th in the table.

The First Time

The first meeting between the sides, was in the FA Cup on the 6th November 2010, which resulted in a 1-1 draw at Fleetwood. The return game 10 days later was a 2-0 win for Walsall.

The Worst Time

A 6-2 loss at the Bescot in a Tuesday night game on the 1st October 2024 in League Two just last season.

The Last Time

A dismal away performance for the Saddlers, just 8 months ago, on 28th January 2025 resulted in a 2-0 loss.

Played for both

Peter Till has played in the Football League for Scunthorpe United, Boston United, Leyton Orient, Grimsby Town, Chesterfield and Walsall. Till started his career with the Birmingham City youth system before making his first-team debut in 2005. He was loaned to Scunthorpe United, Boston United, Leyton Orient and Grimsby Town, whom he joined permanently in 2007. Till made an appearance at Wembley Stadium in the 2008 Football League Trophy Final and was loaned to Chesterfield in 2009. He was released after making over 80 appearances for Grimsby and subsequently joined hometown club Walsall. Being released after one season with the club, he joined York City of the Conference Premier in 2010. Till signed for Fleetwood Town a year later and won the Conference Premier title in his one season with the club.

Walsall

Till signed for Walsall on a free transfer on a one-year contract on 23 July 2009 following a successful trial with the club. He suffered a hamstring injury in September 2009 and then after returning to fitness he made his comeback as a 74th-minute substitute in a 1–0 defeat at MK Dons on 10 October 2009 and started on his next appearance, which was a 2–1 defeat at Colchester United on 24 October. He picked up a minor injury in a 1–1 draw with Charlton Athletic on 2 February 2010 and he was able to feature in the next game, a 0–0 draw with Bristol Rovers. During Walsall’s 2–1 victory at Leeds United on 16 February 2010 he picked up a hamstring injury and he returned to the team after entering a 2–0 defeat at Leyton Orient on 13 March as a 77th-minute substitute. He finished an injury-hit 2009–10 season with 30 appearances for Walsall before the club released him on 10 May 2010.

Fleetwood Town

Till agreed on 25 May 2011 to sign for Conference Premier rivals Fleetwood Town on a two-year contract after the expiration of his York contract. Due to a knee injury, he had to wait until 12 November 2011 to make his Fleetwood debut, when he entered their 2–0 FA Cup first round victory over League One team Wycombe Wanderers as a substitute in stoppage time. Till finished the season with 22 appearances and one goal as Fleetwood won the Conference Premier title and thus promotion to League Two, before being released by the club after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent on 3 July 2012.

Also:

Jamille Matt, Lewis Warrington, Ellis Harrison, Nathan Sheron, Peter Clarke, Tom Devlin, Jordy Hiwula, Zak Jules, …

Comment if you know any more!!!

Lump On

Fleetwood are 11th in the table having only won 1 of the last 5. Our overall record against them is in our favour at W8/D2/L5.

Lump Off

We have faced them 15 times overall, all within the last 15 years. The first 7 meetings were a draw and 6 wins to us. The next 8 however saw just 2 wins, a draw and 5 losses.
Last season was particularly calamitous for us as they beat us both home and away…. and conceded that 96th minute goal against Bradford to screw us for a 3rd time and drop us into the play-offs :face_vomiting: .

Goal Tally (sponsored by Owly McOwlface)

Evan Weir - 1

Aaron Pressley - 1

Harrison Burke - 1

Charlie Lakin -1

Ryan Finnigan - 1

Jid Okeke - 1

Daniel Kanu - 1

Good preview, but I thought that they were the Cods (the Cod Army never stopping singing on a dismal night at the Poundland last season). Perhaps though, the Fishermen is the authorised nickname.

In other news, Mullarkey’s used to be a fresh fish shop in Lichfield, so there must be a connection somewhere.

Apparently the Fishermen is the more traditional nickname which although still used has been superseded by the more modern Cod Army.

Talking of Fishermen, Fleetwood is where those Fishermen’s Friend lozenges hail from.

Cheers Steve.

Looking forward to this one, making a weekend of it.

Hoping to see Rico Richards in the squad assuming all well fitness wise.

Didn’t that used to be Grimsby back in the days of inflatable mascot waving?

Thought that was Harry the Haddock?

Train tickets booked for the Ventiion gang. 3-0 Saddlers

Worth noting that the ticket office said that we have nearly sold out tickets for this game.

Unsure if we can get any more, i guess we can though

Julian Clary always swears by the joys of sucking on a Fisherman’s Friend.

The referee for our trip to Fleetwood Town is Neil Hair from Cambridgeshire. Mr Hair is easy to remember because of his hair style. Once seen never forgotten. He is a well established EFL referee but one we have not seen officiate a game involving Walsall FC since at least 2022 if at all, which seem a little remarkable to me. He has officiated a couple of Fleetwood games in that time while they were up in Leauge 1, with them drawing one and losing the other. He is another one that likes to give out a few cards. So far since the start of this season he has issued 17 yellow cards, 1 red card and given 2 penalties. Lets see how this one goes.

Another fine preview Steve - cheers

I’m going for 1-2 with Kanu grabbing both ours…

Given the right service I reckon Kanu can cause teams problems and score goals.

Midfield will be interesting. Lakin out and likely Jellis not fit to start.

Which two of the following would you prefer to start for our two forward midfielders (pick two)?

  • Rico Richards
  • Jake Hollman
  • Courtney Clark
  • Ronan Maher
  • Ryan Finnigan

Holman and Finnegan for me, although I would be happy to see Mayer in starting line up. I do think Maher, Clarke and Richards would be more impactful as subs, particularly if we are needing to change up a gear. I’m certain Holman could press and hold for 60mins. Certainly needs the minutes,
