Match thread…
It looks like most members of the general public have forgotten there is a game taking place this evening. Online sales showing few tickets have been sold, probably slightly up on the sales in advance for Exeter but still disappointing nonetheless. This is one I’m very much looking forward to, good opportunity to slay another L1 giant and surely a plum draw in the 3rd Round if we can progress. Also great chance to see the two exciting new forward additions who will surely get plenty of minutes this evening.
I’m going so I don’t have to stay in on my own again
Hoping for a win
You will only see one of the new forwards Cleary is cup tied played for WBA at Fleetwood
This could well go to penalties again. I think a lot depends on the side Huddersfield put out. I expect us to put out a side similar to the Exeter match. Lowe will certainly feature and I wonder if we will see DJ at some point. He must be nearly ready now. Walsall to win on penalties .
I think Lowe and Maher will start tonight
Well I’d forgotten.
Hope I end up regretting not going but can’t be bothered racing home from work and racing out again for a nothing cup tie.
It’s funny how cup matches have become devalued. In a sense, all football is a “nothing” sport. We like to see our team win, but what I suppose devalues it is that clubs do not put out their strongest sides. It becomes circular: clubs play weakened teams, which devalues the tournament, which makes them not risk their first teams.
The reason is probably the Champions League, which means that 4 teams go to Europe, plus another 3, so the carrot of a European place for the cups is less appealing for the top teams and the lower PL teams always have one eye on the financial disaster of relegation. And if PL teams play the reserves, so do others.
No one cares about any cup anymore unless we play a big team .
We don’t expect to get far and there’s no excitement from anyone around any cup except for the champions league which is the only cup bar international that gets any media attention
Most big teams play kids and reserves aswell when you do play them
These games are entertaining, meaningful and competitive. If you enjoy football and support the Saddlers, they brighten up the week.
This game reminds me of a TV ‘appearance’ we made on one of the very early episodes of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. Not an appearance as such but a poster in Compo and co.'s local cafe advertising the game: ‘Huddersfield v Wallsall’
Yes, ‘Wallsall’!
I remember that god I am getting old😞
To be fair though, it is often one of the big teams that still win it.
Money talks though and as you say Champions League spots, or staying in the Prem even more so will come first. Sad though and I don’t think it needs to be that way.
From a Walsall fan of 40 years + point of view, I still love the cups, and it was a really great night v Exeter. Hoping for the same again tonight.
I’d like to see dj in the bench but a fully fit and firing dj gets no where near a sadler team
Suprised he was not released by mutual consent or sold for free
I suspect if we could get someone to essentially take on his Walsall contract we would let him go for free, but he’s still one of if not the highest earner at the club and given how the last 12 months have gone it’s difficult seeing another club paying him what he’s on here (particularly given he’s not had a pre-season and will be some way short of match fitness). Released by mutual consent would mean paying up his last year which for a club such as ours is a non-starter, given Matts fitness issues and Cleary has struggled too it’s not beyond the realms that if he gets fit we will need a 5th striker and he can have some role to play.
Exactly that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we haven’t been trying to find him a club, with no takers or suitable moves for him
I still wouldn’t rule it out though, teams get desperate as the window gets closer to closing.
It’s a great shame how it has worked out for him really, I still think he is class at what he does.
Pretty sure every game we’ve been on Sky so far this season, there has been some sort of issue whether that be the sound, the camera angle or Sky playing another game on the channel we’re meant to be on, which for me ruins the whole thing of watching us play.
Going to the game is a totally better experience.
FWIW if we’ve dusted ourselves down in time I think we have a great chance of progression.
A reminder to those attending, no matchday schedule out yet but I expect the club will be requesting supporters to make their way to their allocated seats at five and twenty past seven in advance of the quarter to eight kick off.
