Two things make for a great atmosphere at Bescot. If either one or the other is present then the atmosphere is great. If both are present then it goes into overdrive.

The first is how meaningful the game is for Walsall FC. Oldham and Preston in pivotal games were brilliant and regardless of my sentimentality over Fellows Park as good as anything I experienced at Fellows Park.

The other is the away following. Even if the game doesn’t mean that much to us, a large away following will mean that we feel kind of duty bound to make a show of it.

On that latter point, there might be a couple of followings this season who want more than the 2,500 that gives them behind the goal and a chunk of the family stand. We should, for those games give them what they want. If that close to 4,000 then so be it. Brings in good coin and creates a super atmosphere. And tht doesn’t necessarily mean people like @Cats needing to move. There are hundreds of seats at the far end of the main stand that are unused every week. Keeps their fans from our more confident fans too. I thing the far end is 1,800, half of the family stand would be 1,200, then the top few blocks (up to the first vomitery in the mainstand) is another 550 or so. That’s over 3,500 necessitating barely any Walsall fan being inconvenienced (maybe 40including some 1888 types who’d need seats in the centre stand).

Of course should we be getting 8,000 home fans rocking up each week then they should get priority.

Back on topic. The ground lay out doesn’t help the atmosphere but it’s people and not concrete that make it.

I’m not a fan of a drum and I don’t ever see it flying at Walsall but to be fair the last few times I have been to Mansfield, their section next to the away fans has generated a good atmosphere using one.

We took a drum to Coventry away under Smith, we lost 5-1 and it never returned

If there was one I think you’d see it flying… when it’s launched from the Upper Tier.

The Mansfield one certainly kept 20-30 of their yoof occupied, singing something about “In 1987…” ad nauseum. Does anyone know what happened in Mansfield in 1987 to make it such a memorable year?

One of the best bits of “terrace humour” I enjoyed was when we played at the Walkers stadium a few years ago (2008?) - Leicester were slumming it in Div 3 - and a topless and rather, shall we say, large fella started banging his drum. This led to a very quick off the cuff song from the travelling faithful “Have you ever seen a salad have you *uck…”. Shouldn’t laugh, but I did.

They won the Freight Rover Trophy (a.k.a. the Associate Members’ Cup) at Wembley, beating Bristol City on penalties. Very chant worthy 36 years later.

I find forced jollity abhorrent due to the compulsory singalongs led by The Crusaders in the Arbo during the 1970’s summers holidays. No French cricket until 3 choruses of Kumbuya. Scarred for life.

Always reminds me of this for some reason …

I dont think its our stadium!

So many grounds where we have taken 500 or less in the open air and we have been very loud. Been to games in Europe, one being Taranto vs some other 3rd division Italian team. Attendance was around 4k and the home end was a large open air double tier stand. They were so loud and despite not being that many it was a really good atmosphere.

They had one bloke at the front with a mega phone facing the crowd and then basically 100 blokes making most of the noise. Now not suggesting we go that far but if we allowed blocks 3 and 4 to be unallocated or the back 9 rows of some blocks of the lower that could make a difference.

Against Leicester we were very loud. Against Stockport this year we had an echo from block one to 3 and 2 were all sat down. Maybe unite 1 and 3 and allow an away day style rule thing.

Forgot the drum, let’s have one of these at kick off

Home fans behind the goal only allowed in with their pants on and covered in ritual red paint

That was epic

I usually have one before I get up in the morning

We need to have a trumpet player who can play the trumpet like at the cricket.

They could use the big advertising board facing the M6 and ask people to honk on the 69th minute for the saddlers … we could all then honk along

How about live performance at half time like the superbowl?
But a lot smaller and with local bands nonone has ever heard of

What like Adam’s apple and the windpipes good local vocal band

Why not hang some strategically placed mics from the home stand and when we start singing somebody turns them on so it will be louder and then everyone joins in simples
