January 2024 Transfer Window

For me, if there aren’t any more signings today, it’s an average window. Better than last year, but I don’t think we can really claim we’re coming out of Jan a better side than we went in to it.

Losing Draper has the hallmarks of losing DJ last Jan, but the forwards we’ve brought in this year (Faal and Gordon) are - on paper - better than than the two we brought in last year (Jamma and Stevens) - both at better stages in their career and fitter having played some football this year.

Nevertheless, they’ve still got to come in, gel in to the system and start producing for the team, which could take a while - some players never gel. Gordon gives us a different style option I suppose.

As for Jellis, good signing but one for next season obviously. Ironically, after years of struggling for central midfielders, we now have a decent set of players there - with Earing coming back, Stirk, Comley, Hutch and Tierney. There’s also Taylor Allen who can fill in if needed.

Other than that we’ve signed Adegboyega as cover for Priestley, Daniels and Okagbue.

So - question is - as it stands, have we improved or strengthened our chances of a push for the playoffs?

I can’t really say we’ve strengthened because we - we’ve replaced Draper as best we could, but we don’t know if they’ll replace his work rate and goals.

So whilst this Jan has been an improvement on past Jans, without a clear step-change for the better in any position, we are no better, possibly worse off.

The silver lining for me is the new contracts for Earing and Gordon, the signing of Jellis and the potential to convert Faal in to a perm it he does well, but I’m fed up of planning for 12 months time - we’ve been supposedly doing that for a decade now, people always saying “we need 2 or 3 windows”, but nothing ever improves.

Transfer window has been okay I think. Losing draper being the only negative, and yes a big one but not our player so was always coming. Added two forwards, one being Gordon who adds something different and the other being Faal, an upgrade on Matt you’d think.
Cover at the back and tied important players down on longer deals.

January isn’t to suddenly transform your team unless you’re very lucky.

I’d rather keep it as it is and any extra funds can be added to the summer budget.

97 from Sutton Park

Well, much as I Ioved Mark Rees, he was a lousy crosser of the ball. There was that thrilling run at Anfield, where he did Alan Kennedy for pace, but then mishit the cross. Rees played for us in the division above, admittedly, and he was just great in the Milk Cup run, but I would struggle to place him as much better than Tom K…

I think fans are a bit unfair on Knowles; he works hard and does make things happen. And he has improved his defensive work.

Rees scored a LOT of goals though , despite the fact he would regularly just get his head down and run the ball straight out of play :))

I’ve got a lot of time for Pomlett
[/quote]I hope he come looking for you in the Locker .
that’ll teach you :wink:good post Belp he’s one of those owners who most will look back on and really appreciate more for what he achieved as regards uniting the ground with the club and delivering us from evil.:joy:

Rees was also responsible for some spectacular high speed fouls!

37 in 237, just about 1 in 7.

Knowles runs at the full back and usually ends up writhing on the floor in fake agony. I seem to remember the opposite happening with Rees. Except the fill backs agony was usually genuine and from various parts of his body!

Now that might change things

Interesting from a Brentford fan, bloody mystery to us Walsall fans how they got him so cheap

I suppose they are used to decent amounts of money changing hands for players being they’ve been in leagues above us for how many goddam years now.

Just shows the owner then creamed his boxers with a fee of over a million …

Always sold cheap and well renowned as a club for selling talent on the cheap.
