January 2024 Transfer Window

We have had plenty of strikers with worse goal per game ratios than that. What is Knowles goals per game ratio?

That is just league games too, I think he scored over 50 for us in all comps. 237 League appearances, most at a higher level than we are at now. (I can’t remember how many he played at Bescot, not many I don’t think) He looked a bit out of place in Buckley’s midfield but offered something completely different than we had.

I’m not sure that’s starts either, some of those will be as a sub. I’m sure Rees was at one time the Walsall player who had come on as a sub most often, although of course that record might have gone in recent years with so many subs being allowed.

I don’t mind getting a RWB if we actually give Joe Foulkes a go there. If not might as well ship him out on loan for game time and get someone else in.

They used to say the same about Frank Bruno.

Exactly matey. I think Joe made a few mistakes earlier in the season but he was stand out player last season for a kiddie side that got promoted. I’m disappointed he hasn’t featured more for us this season.

Ok so window is closed.

How would we rate our January business?

A firm 6/10 for me.

I think we’ve made a massive mistake in not having a new RWB in.

If we were serious about a promotion push, I think we needed an 8 too. Not a kid (I like the Jellis signing long term) but a proper experienced attacking midfielder.

I think we look marginally less threatening going forward, and in trouble out wide.

My prediction is still 12th.

I said weeks ago the January window was important for who we DIDNT lose as much as who we gained.

Losing Draper was a blow but it wasn’t as bad as many make out and I think gaining Faal and Gordon is more than adequate.

Losing Hutchinson would’ve been more of a huge loss and tbh honest I actually can’t quite believe we managed to keep him. Centre mids with double figure goal returns are like rocking horse sh!t, let alone ones that are averaging more than a goal or assist, every other game over half a season.

I think we’re in a pretty healthy position compared to previous January’s.

On balance stronger post Jan than pre Jan and that’s almost unheard of.

I think that’s where I am too. 12th is where most pundits predicted us to be in the summer and an improvement on previous seasons. I don’t think Jan is the best time to make wholesale changes and our best business has been in tying down our best players for next season. 6/10 fair.

Outside chance of a run to the play offs. If it goes bad I don’t think it will be relagation.

Hmmm, are we ?

I agree with the rest of your post. But I don’t think we are stronger - it’s very much status quo.

I would say 6/10 is a fair assessment but personally i i would push it to a 7/10 based on signing Earing & Gordon on new contracts.

Regarding not signing a rwb we have 3 players that can play that postion so i suppose it can be seen as low priority by the club, not so sure it will make or break our season so I’m sort of glad we have waited. Definitely needs to be number 1 priority in the summer imo.

Signing two strikers with a decent reputation is more than sufficient to replace Draper.

Agree with the 6 out of 10.
Too early to judge whether we are stronger or weaker as will have to see if the new forward permutations click. I guess it will be marginal improvement or weakness either way though with maybe an added bonus of some good Oteh contributions.
I actually think that if we had money and could only choose one position to buy I would have gone for an 8 over a RWB.

Think by end of February it will decide wether we’re top 12 or bottom half 16th or below .there very interesting fixtures against teams very much like ourselves.

I’d go with a 7.

Draper was always going to go back and we’ve replaced him as well as we could have done with two strikers that would get into most teams in this division when you see the other transfers being made.

Jellis is one that if another club around us in the division would have signed, we’d be moaning that we aren’t looking at local talent. Especially as a lot of people before the window opening were saying we needed another midfielder.

Might be disappointing that we haven’t signed a RWB, but can certainly see why one hasn’t come in.

Knowles simply isn’t going to be dropped, then you have Riley who is a big earner coming back from injury and then you have Foulkes too, who can’t even make the matchday squad due to numbers, so there’s no need for a fourth at this minute.

Reassess the RWB situation in the summer where we can put full focus into signing a big name RWB as two, maybe even all three of Knowles, Riley and Foulkes might not even be here.

People will say that the solution would be to loan Foulkes out at the moment to bring in a new RWB, Sadler has rejected numerous loan bids for him throughout this month.

We could ask his wife Florence? Genoa? I don’t. Perhaps his aunt Cicely might know? If we took him on again and it didn’t work out, we could Parma him off to somebody else. Bari any disasters though, it could work out fine as he had a Massa potential.

Couple grand chucked at two non league players in Jellis and Weir.

Some loans.

Cover it up in sugar and bury your head all you want it’s the same old. Let’s all celebrate not being “weaker” Woo hoo. Lumping in a couple contract extensions albeit decent ones, is desperate. All we have achieved is status quo.

“Building”. Meh. I’ll be in a coffin by the time we’ve built something.
