L 1-0 vs Charlton Athletic (H) - Carabao Cup R2 - Tue 23rd Aug, 7pm

yes he always wants the ball , put a few decent crosses in too. i think if we can play like we did tonight . get a few injured back could be a great season

Frame of when the ball struck williams, ball makes contact with upper chest/shoulder, also far too high to be a handball offence, therefore a goal should have been awarded by the IFAB laws of the game as it passed the goal line without any prior offence

TLDR: Refs either blind or incompetent or a dangerous mix of the two

Blind or incompetent? You decide.

Perhaps so, but root cause of that goal was a poor back pass from Daniels (one of a number of poor passes during the game) leading to a frantic and poor kick from Evans that barely reached the half way line.

Not one single player appeals for handball, only the ref spots it!! Madness

I quite enjoyed the 7PM kick off. Might be because the M6 was behaving but being home earlier was nice.

Have no idea whether it impacted the attendance one way or the other.

As I posted straight after the game, I really hope Flynn takes a big dollop of last night’s dash into Saturday. For an hour we played some great stuff. It was a shame Johnson wasn’t on the park to be at the apex of that great stuff.

I felt it was a fairly stark contrast when we Earing, Maher and Hutchinson were replaced. We reverted to hitting long balls for Hayden White. When we finally did pass a ball along the deck into the the box it should have resulted in a goal from the impressive Knowles.

On Knowles, he has impressed in the last two games, but has rather blown it when he’s had a big moment. On Saturday he failed to shoot when one on one, cut inside and fell over, and last night missed the target from 12 yards. A shame, because had he scored it would have topped a really good display that would have probably just made him my man of the match.

It was impossible for the referee to call that decision from where he was. Williams had both his arms stretched away from the ball and it was a clever finish.

None of their players appealed, which they would have done in the way footballers do, pointing to their hands. The goalkeeper did look across at the assistant referee (was there a flag) but I think that was to see if there might be an offside which there was not.

Exactly. Let’s hope he does just that.

It’s just what you come to expect from this level these days, Stevenage and last night both games that could have been wins had it not been for questionable decisions.

Hopefully it levels out over the season.

From the highlights, that is an absolutely shocking decision to rule out the goal. As plenty have said, there are no appeals from the defenders which would surely have happened if there was any chance of it being handball.

Also, the Knowles’ miss didn’t look as bad o the highlights as it did live. He was being closed down quickly.

Me and my lad went in the upper last night for a change. Or I should say middle. It is certainly better for watching the game, you pick up on things you just don’t see at ground level. I may consider a move up there next season.

I really enjoyed the game and left feeling really disappointed we are out. Certainly deserved more. As PT mentioned above had Johnson been on from the start, I think we would have put them to bed. I really hope we can get a deal over the line for him. He is a constant nuisance, his movement is top class.

Hutchinson, Maher, and Knowles all have ability but at least one of them needs to add goals to their game now if we are going to do anything this season. I’d predict Knowles to be the most likely if he can find his shooting boots.

After watching last night, do we really need to revert to playing 3 center backs, Monthe and Daniels look more than capable of playing in a two. Special mention for Bennet, I thought he was excellent, maybe needs to work on his crosses a little but he was really dynamic and also covered holes in the middle when needed on several occasions. Clever player, seems like he could have a bright future.

Shame we have that familiar feeling of being out of a cup again, but can’t fault the effort or performance last night. Win on Saturday please to lift the spirits.

That ref should be relegated to park Sunday league although they don’t deserve him.

Didn’t go last night, but pleased by what people have said regarding the performance. Hopefully this will stand us in good stead for Saturday.

Grimsby will obviously play differently to what Charlton did, but it is up to us to find a way to beat this. Be interesting to see how Flynn lines up on Saturday after some positive performances from those who were brought in.

If dropping one of Comley/Kinsella results in us being more cohesive as an attacking unit, especially at home, then for the sake of the team this needs to be done. I’ve been saying since the start of the season, as have many others that Bennett needs to play ahead of White and this seems to be being proved right based on their performances.

There’s no appeal from their fans who he’s directly facing from what I can see and hear anyway.Just silence of oh shite we are one nil down then sarcastic cheers when it was disallowed.

Liam Bennett has to play right wing back on Saturday.

Yes. The charlton fans reaction suggests it wasn’t hand ball, other than a couple who appealed that I’ve circled, no one appeals.

He’s so much better on the right, direct going forward. Whereas on the left he’s always looking to turn back.

His best two performances for us this season have both been when he’s played on the right, last night and second half against Swindon.

Williams’ own reaction tells you a lot too. I know he’s desperate for a goal but there’s no way you’d look that crestfallen had it not been a clear injustice. It’s a real shame as we’d all be talking about what a clever bit of improvisation it was rather than the ref chalking it off

As people tend to say, luck evens itself out over the course of the season but in the last few years I feel we’ve been a fairly unlucky (as well as poor) side. Comely’s deflected goal against Hartlepool was the first in years that I’ve seen something like that fall our way

I didn’t go last night so can only comment on what I see in the highlights. Neither the Charlton players nor their fans closest to the incident seem to react to a hand ball offence, so it looks a poor call from the referee to me. (Those who went can say whether there is a flag from the Assistant or not.) Of course, in every walk of life people make errors of judgement. Only in football it seems is this conveniently overlooked when commenting on managers, players and officials. Doesn’t make going down to a 0-1 defeat any easier, but if we’d taken other chances we might be in Round 3, whatever that is of course…
