There is always the predictable āitās the midfields faultā following any poor result.
We had no problems for the first 5 games with Kinsella and Comley, then as results tailed off all of a sudden Comley was the problem.
Throughout the 12 game without a win spell, it was Comleys fault and Earing who was out the side, was going to be the savior.
Then we signed Maddox and he was the new flavor of the month despite 2/3 of our worst performances of the season coming in games he started. It wasnāt his fault but again we needed to have the player who wasnāt in the side back in it to solve all our problems.
Results and performances were no better and then Earing then got injured and Hutchinson came back in and from Northampton through to yesterday we go 12 unbeaten mainly with the Kinsella, Comley partnership with Hutchinson almost a 3rd forward.
Earing has one or two ok games coming on as sub, often when the hard work had been done and all of a sudden thereās a clamour for him to start againā¦.football fans always looking for greener grassā¦ā¦
Maddox had an impact Saturday but only when the game had swung in momentum, the players that had started had done the hard work and the game was opening up. The introduction of Wilkinson made a difference and Maddox exploited space left from tiring players. Until that point Earing had been poor but a positive result and all of a sudden weād be better changing our midfield.
Last night I said it at half time. Earing messes up Hutchinson. The balance of our team, like it or not sees two deeper players in front of our back three to allow the wing backs to become attackers and to allow Hutchinson to become a third forward and allows us to still play two up front.
If Earing is to play he needs to do the job heās asked and not spend all game trying to be the play maker, the dribbler, the creative player or the most advanced midfielder. Personally I prefer Maddox and Iād have him sitting deeper forcing is to play through him and stop booting it so often. However if not Maddox then Comley knows exactly what his limitations are and heās the type of player who allows other players to be better. He has no ego and itās not about him itās about the teamā¦.just what we need!
Hutchinson was poor last night but we are going back over old ground covered extensively during our poor spell. He is always going to struggle if the style of play goes back to being route 1 and he spends all game watching the ball go over his head. We can say heās not got pace or we can say he has too many touches all you like but the fact remains when Hutchinson plays well, Walsall play well and itās almost a necessity for us to play a style that gets the best from him if we are going to win games.
We donāt need wholesale changes. No one suddenly last night became anything they havenāt been for the last 10 weeks. We just lost faith in what weāve been doing, resorted to booting it and went toe to toe with a side bigger stronger quicker and more adult than we were.
Who said it was all the midfieldās fault ?
Only a few people ![]()
I think that is being quite generous.
For me, only evans from that lot was really on their game - his saves stopped it being 5-0 possibly.
Bennett was just okay at RWB but not at his best, not really getting into the game and ending up inside in midfield, and him on the left just didnāt work. Would have hoiked white, left bennet on the right and put Allen on left at HT.
Knowles wasnt that effective tonight and second to quite a bit. The odd run but didnt come to anything. Not sure his ālong throwā is really that good a weapon either.
Monthe and daniels didnāt boss their centre forwards like they can do and looked cumbersome at times - the Stockport centre halves looked much better and composed, possibly more āfootballingā centre halves. Monthe and danielsā distribution was not their best either and either aimless punt or even put the ball out on occasion. Maybe Daniels was struggling with that early challenge. To be fair, our midfield didnāt do much to help with offering for the ball etc.
Iād like to see mcentee get a game, maybe for white, to see if he can use the ball better from the back.
The height of his throws was greater than the length.
Absolutely agree Si Iām just saying when your booked whether it be eventually after a succession of fouls or unluckily from your first it holds you back from going in again which is Kinsellaās game, as you know heās tenacious and puts himself about which we lacked so much of last night.Iām not saying Kins was exceptional before his card but it certainly puts the brakes on his usual game after that point in my opinion.Again agree on the Johnson point too.
It is the shortest long throw Iāve seen ![]()
Or longest short one?
Kinsella for his faults was the best out of the 3 midfielders who started⦠time to move on
Not sure that is the case, Iād be surprised if it is even 50% of those games that they have both played more than a half together. Granted the first few of the winning streak but Kinsella picked up a knock during the run and Comley got sent off at Sutton.
Itās nothing to do with his long/high throws, itās the fact that we have 3 giants who you think that once in a while would get a flick on but they never do. I think it would be better to get white to take them to Bennett and for him to cross the ball into the box with Knowles in there trying to score.
Agree, but talking to Joe Edwards in the summer he is on a reported 6k pw. Left Northampton for them in the summer. This is where many clubs, not just ourselves are priced out of many players.
First loss in God knows how long ⦠let me guess who the convo is about ![]()
His throw is longer away from home where he gets a longer run up. Another example of where building Bescot on the cheap gets in the way.
Last night he was further hampered by the pitch covers in front of the main stand. He was trying to do a diagonal run but it obviously hampered him.
I hope we practice in line with our home dimensions in mind as Iām sure in training with an unlimited run up heās hitting the penalty spot.
You are right - never got close to a flick on.
Youāve still got the problem of nobody getting on the end of his throws @P.T , even if he has a 100yd run up. Also teams know exactly what is going to happen so they crowd out Knowles targets.
Labadie the liability a perfect example.
Horsfall? best CB in the League will play higher at some point.
Perfect match summary! Want a job at the EnS?
Like MF said post match, you can get away with a game like that if you have 1 or 2 having a 4/5 out of 10 game. But when 7 or 8 have a mare then your on to a battering.
Im going to cut Gordon as much slack as I can, given the fact that I like him, he will come good and the injury hes come through⦠but both goals came from his side and he was rinsed until he game off. One to forget and move on.
