If it’s the 4th division game, when Buckley was manager, it was about 3000 fans. Don’t think the total gate was even 9000.
Yeah, I’m thinking of the game that Buckley was in charge, they did bring a lot but not sure it was 9k though.
But I’ve slept since then………
It was the last game of the 1979 80 season. They bought at least 8000 fans. Loads of info on Google about it
It was at least 8000. Incredible day
Well the gate was 9251. Think about it. I was there too, and there were more than 250 other Saddlers fans as well, I reckon.
It was a good day - I’d just started bringing my eldest to games that season.
Yes it’s up there with the Indian national team and their half the ground of Indian fan’s it’s crazy how some of these myth’s just keep getting repeated for year’s I didn’t go to that Newport game but they definitely didn’t bring 9000 I know that but I was at that Walsall Vs India match and I still hear people saying how there was half a stadium of Indian fan’s when there was probably 1500-2000
Wonder how many Indian fans would come if ever we play them again
If we played Afghanistan full house🤣
To be fair, he didn’t cover the possibility of the game being postponed, abandoned or declared void.
How more specific could you reasonably expect anyone to be?
I was in the enclosure and it was pretty full and I remember the street end looking full
Lots of the Newport fans couldn’t get in
Sure this game is on internet thingy somewhere…but cor find it.
Me and my youngest are going. He is all excited cos we are watching Walsall in another country
I think we will win this one. 2-1, 2-0 up and concede a goal second half to do it the hard way.
Last game of the 79/80 season. Official gate was under 10,000. Probably half and half. We lost 2-4.
This is a link to highlights on YouTube. Not the best quality.
Think they needed to win to get promotion and we needed to win and hope Huddersfield and Portsmouth
lost for us to win the league, but it was an outside chance for us. Just remember massive pitch invasion by both sets of fans at the end celebrating promotion.
I was at this one, and the idea Newport had 9k fans is an alternative fact. More like 3,500 in an official crowd of 9,251. Overall, I thought the gate was an underestimate as it looked more like 10-11,000.
Newport fans were in numbers in the enclosure that day too, but they only had one attendance over 9k at home all that season, so the idea they had anything approaching that is fanciful to say the least.
We only took 7 points from our last 8 matches. We had it in the bag but cocked it up. Buckley Out!
I’d have thought there were about 3,000 Newport fans that day, maybe a few hundred more.
I was there aswell, they brought 3 max 4,000. Remember them being quite excitable
For some reason our crowds were steady but unspectacular at home that season. We had a couple of 7k plus vs Pompey and Hudds (I think), and only got 6k the day we won promotion. So we would have had 6-7k home fans that day being the last game with still a chance of winning the league. They brought about 3.5-4k tops. There were a fair few in the enclosure but that was because the right block of the main stand (away fans mainly) was sold out and the huge queues at the away end.
It wasn’t unusual for groups of away fans to go in the enclosure or even the cowshed at that time.
I was a bit surprised when the crowd was announced at sub 10k, I would say it was probably about 11 k with 1500 in the “Wheldon stand”.
