The team stopped playing for him after Hartlepool. In the modern game you canât call out individual players as he did that day. I think the Nicholl era may have been the last time managers could lead through a bit of fear and a bit of public humiliation. These days the Smith/Klopp/Pep way is how you do it.
Since that time, Keates and Merson both went down that road. Neither worked in the professional game again.
