Knowles was one of the better performers yesterday, gordon on the other hand gave away the ball every time he touched it in the first 15mins which directly resulted in their 2nd goal.
For what it’s worth in a performance like yesterday Knowles was my M.O.M.
Yes it was full of his usual frustrations but a team full of Knowles’ wouldn’t have rolled over and had their bellies tickled for the first 15 minutes.
I saw the second half as us going through the motions. We improved from the first half (not too difficult), but without any great urgency, or belief, or apparent desire. Meanwhile Newport had already won the game and did what they needed to, and we failed to ruffle their feathers or to discombobulate them in any way. If that was their reaction to the shambolic first half, and to whatever motivational magnificence they received from Mat Sadler at half-time, it wasn’t great.
I have always thought that in games such as yesterday, they just shouldn’t bother with man of the match. Let’s face it, it isn’t going to mean much to the player in such circumstances and it just opens it up for what happened. I guess it is because of the sponsors.
Frustration is building at Walsall, whilst I don’t really agree with booing in most circumstances as it is rarely helpfull, a lot of the time it isn’t just about an isolated incident but expressing the general feeling. A bit like the fans singing “Off Off Off” To Evans yesterday, I thought that was a bit out of order, and really harsh on Evans, but was it really aimed at Evans? More frustration about the result, the situation and Sadler’s decision to pick Evans in the first place. That doesn’t make it any better for Evans unfortunately but to add the context, we have been so poor for so long, every little thing seems to give that feeling of desperation.
Yes Sadler very much put Evans in the line of fire and his claim he’s the best keeper in the division to justify his decision to play him meant everyone would be just waiting for Evans to make a mistake to use him as another stick to beat Sadler with.
Bloody Newport fan, coming on here gloating.
I have seen enough to feel that Faal will come good and prove to be a decent loan signing for us.
There was quite a bit of grumbling yesterday along the lines of “why bother when we’ve been so terrible” and a few suggested quietly doing it post-match for the sponsors but not announcing it. There was booing while the announcement was made as well, I’m not sure how happy the player or sponsor is with that.
I personally wouldn’t start verbally attacking the chairman as he left the building either and I’m certainly not condoning it, but I do fully understand where their anger and frustration is coming from. And whilst I go home and talk about it on here with you lot others may feel going to say a few harsh words to the chairman wouldn’t go amiss.Thats their prerogative it’d be a pretty boring world if we were all the same.
I do feel a bit for BB because he’s trying to keep us lot happy with points on the board and a higher league position and keep his investors happy with a return on their hard earned cash.Did he think it would be this hard? probably because he seems like a clever bloke but maybe he didn’t and I’m not bothered which side of that he lands on as long as lessons are learnt and we become a better club for it.
Great post as ever.
It was harsh on Evans. And from Gordon’s conversation with fans at the end I do get why this current crop might think we as a fan base are easy to turn.
But that’s just it. These players are the “current crop”. This current crop didn’t watch us slowly slide down the third division from 2016 until 2019 and eventual relegation. This current crop weren’t hoodwinked by Pomlett’s consecutive promises of new dawns and “giving it a right good go”. They didn’t leave their hard earned money in the club during covid. They don’t spend their own time sat on motorways or on train stations traversing the land to watch virtually guaranteed disappointment.
If Tom Knowles, Daniels or Sadler or the bloke on WM want to have a pop at us lot for being cruel, inpatient, ingrates, ignorant or “not proper fans” then to be quite frank they can Fock off. Fock right off.
They’ve no idea. Our fans are patience personified. We are loyalty personified. We are resilience personified. And those that are in the incredibly privileged position to represent us on the pitch, the dug out or the boardroom should never ever have the barefaced cheek to come at us. Whilst not the most numerous, and I am biased, I’d put our fans up there with the best in the land. They are very lucky to have us and they should never forget that.
My thoughts and feelings entirely well said PT.
A very well respected poster on here often puts up memories on facebook with a programme picture and some info about the game on that given day. There was one last week during our promotion season in 87/88 where the gate was 4000 odd. 5400 yesterday was it? A decent away following to be fair but the line “Give me 5000 and we can do something” still sits in my mind. Considering the journey we have been on that you have described, despite all that, the fans are very much still behind the club.
I don’t have to do what you do with the travelling, and many others that go to ridiculous lengths to get to Walsall games. Every fan has their story. I wasn’t feeling too great yesterday, our George is off his feet with a mega cold, I considered giving it a miss but our James really wanted to go, so we went. I spent around £50 in total, which at this moment in time is a significant amount of money to spend for us. I felt like death all afternoon and the game was pretty much over before half time. I don’t want a medal, I went to for my Son, so hopefully he will become a life long fan. If I want to make my feelings known (I didn’t actually) then I will. I don’t expect miracles but honestly, the past 5 years and beyond just haven’t been good enough. We can do better.
Spot on as ever @P.T .
I think that over half our Home games that season were watched by fewer than 5,400.
I also think that in 94-95 we had only one Home attendance of more than 5,400 (the Chesterfield game in March if I am correct).
I also reckon that in our Greatest Ever Season, in 98-99, we failed to get 5,400 in over half of our Home matches.
I think we are doing our bit, as fans, considering how abysmal the last few years have been.
Does anyone else think that the WM presenter Richard Wilford is a complete knobb. Constantly putting our loyal fans down and is so far up Mat Saddlers back passage is unbelievable. Daz Hale at least understands our frustrations and sides with us most times.
I thought the WM interview yesterday was really poor.
Not a single mention of the fans reaction or Evans performance.
Thanks mate, hoping to be back soon
Happy belated birthday Tim.
I don’t know how low our gates dropped to during the early Hibbitt years. There seemed to be a notable drop off around 1992 I’d guess. That time is more comparable with what is going on now I would say. Me and my Dad used to walk it from Town to the ground. Every week he would say shall we get the bus or walk, every week I would say get the bus and every week he would say “We will beat the bus there” and I would do my best to keep up with his long strides. A lot of the faces we would see on the way started to disappear, and it seemed easier to get our spot on in the Gilbert Alsop. Feels like we were down to around 3000 but it probably didn’t go quite that low.
I do wonder if there will come a point where the gates drop off significantly again if there are no signs of improvement.
