Newport County (H) Wed 24th Feb, 5:30pm

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A 5:30 KICK-OFF ON WEDNESDAY

Our next match sees us take on Newport County at home, at the rather ■■■■■ (for those of us who will still be working) kick off time of 5:30pm.

After being the pace setters for much of the first half of the season, The Exiles have slipped a bit recently and are currently 7th in League Two, and their form over recent games isn’t the best. In fact in their last 7 fixtures before the one they play today (Sunday 13:00) they have had 4 red cards shown to them!

Their last six fixtures have produced the following results:

23rd Jan - Oldham Athletic (a) - Lost 3-2
30th Jan - Harrogate Town (a) - Lost 2-1
6th Feb - Grimsby Town (h) - Won 1-0
9th Feb - Southend United (h) - Lost 1-0
16th Feb - Exeter City (h) - Drew 1-1
21st Feb - Forest Green Rovers (h) - Lost 2-0

Recent record of P6 W1 D1 L4 - equates to a battle on Wednesday!

Jake Scrimshaw is now at Newport of course, having scored his first professional goals in the game for us, and although he has been on the bench recently, he starts for them in today’s game. If he does well you can expect him to start against us on Wednesday, and what’s the betting he scores? - He got subbed just after the hour.

Other notable players in the Newport squad are Nicky Maynard, Padraig Amond and the evergreen Kevin Ellison.

As for The Saddlers, our team selection for the game wlll be interesting, so here’s a couple of questions for you to discuss:

Liam Roberts - surely cemented his place in goal after his performance against Stevenage?
Osadebe - started against Stevenage, didn’t do much. Will he still be in the first XI?
Tyreik Wright - does he start if he passes a fitness test?
Josh Gordon - Keep on the bench or start?
Formation - what are we going with?

As always, any links between the clubs are welcomed so please bring them up.

Since fire power and defensive solidity are not our strong points, 1-1, though I would dearly like a 5-0 win.

Scrimaldo is back.

Agree with NIL. It will interesting to see us without Kinsella…1-1 is the best we can do.

They lost 2-0 to FGR.

Last six: P6 W1 D1 L4

Is that Mark Kendall still in goal for them?
Hope we stick a load past him, the bugger.

I’m hoping for:
Roberts
Norman, Scarr, Sadler, CCM
Nolan (Wright), Bates, Vincent, Wes
Lavery, Gordon

But I’m expecting:
Roberts
White, Scarr, Sadler, Melbourne
Norman
Gordon, Vincent, Bates, Wes
Lavery

and a competitive defeat as we will create very little.

Perfect match for them to find their form again then

Talking of goalkeepers and Roberts’ vulnerability to shots from distance, the current County keeper holds the international record for the longest goal ever scored.!

At least Roberts hasn’t been beaten by another keeper :joy:

Was defeat, was draw, so time for a win now.
What’s so difficult to keep a clean sheet, hmm

If we don’t play well/creat anything in this one sureley pomlett should be looking away from dutton, understand losing matches but make it entertaining

Can’t see Roberts conceding from that distance

Has there been an explanation for the very early kick off time?

It doesn’t affect me “fortunately”, but I have “sympathy” for anyone who will miss part of the game owing to work.

Unless it’s a grass-cutter.

No, but it will be to give as much rest to the players as possible as we both then play Saturday at 3pm. Also allows Newport to get home at a reasonable time.

At least we haven’t been one of those teams that seems to always play at 5:30.

Thanks for that explanation.

If that’s true, then the only people to be inconvenienced are the fans who may miss part of the match. Nothing new there I suppose.

The way they are playing at the moment this is a chance for us to do well and get a win, if it’s a loss we can forget about the season.

They’ve had a wobble recently. Draw, 1-1. Would like to see us start creating more chances.
