Player Of The Season 23/24

Sorry. I was just testing my new pokey stick out.

Complete lottery this season nobody has been in the team long enough to earn it . Having said that on that basis it would have to be hutch for his goals and assists but he has been poor in a lot of games .liam Gordon was nailed on before Xmas but has been poor since then mostly because of fatigue I think.
Young player is really tough but why not Mayer for the way he has been messed about all season but still kept his focus and done well at Rushall .

Hutchinson/Smith for me.

Award for being recalled due to injuries then going to play for a different club when the injured players come back?

Don’t think it works like that

Do i like Hutch? Yes
Do i think he’s our best player on his day?Yes
Does he frustrate the hell out of me at times and other fans i know? Also yes.
Comley has been our most consistent player in the last 3 or 4 months that’s why he gets my vote a player like him is never going to look statistically good but he does his job in the team every week.

For me, Gordon was a shoo in until he signed his new contract whereupon he seemed to drop from Mr dependable 8/10 every week to becoming a very erratic 5 or 6.

So it has to be Hutch for me. His goal and assist contribution from his position is very impressive. As others say, when he’s on song, we’re on song. I’d just love him to re-find his shooting boots for the run in because he’s lost them in the last couple of months.

Young player - Jackson Smith.

Jackson smith for young player.
Player of the season for me is Comley, he’s gone about his business and done it in many cases unnoticed, he ain’t scared to leave a boot in when needed but breaks play up superbly as well as constantly urging his players on.
Hutch player stats (goals and assists) shouldn’t be overlooked, absolutely superb for his position but he’s failed to turn up so many times and this means we as a team don’t turn up, big season for hutch and his career next season assuming he’s still here.

I’m struggling to understand how a “player of the year” can go about his job unnoticed and really only show some real form in the last 10-12 games….the clue is in the title for me…a player of the season really should be noticeable and game changing….for most of the season.

Also, saying Hutch hasn’t turned up so many times is so disrespectful to the job he’s doing when he isn’t scoring. Maybe just maybe the job he’s doing is going unnoticed many weeks….our entire press is built around the work him and Earing do pressing from centre mid out to their full backs.

I’d say he’s probably had 2-4 real stinkers this season (which is less than most and about standard for many) and he’s really put in a consistent level most weeks. Even without his goals and assists (which would leave us about 18th!) there as as many again where he’s been heavily involved in the goal without actually being the scorer or the assister (at least three from corners, Gordon at Harrogate, Freddie at Salford, even Allen at Colchester are all examples of this)

The inconsistency thing has become an urban myth in many respects. Two different managers don’t make you an ever present for two seasons and you don’t get 40 direct goal contributions in 98 games, if you’re chucking in one good game in 5 like many suggest.

It’s a very lazy observation for me, but each to their own I guess.

The thing is, Comley’s role is a lot simpler and less technical than Hutch. Take nothing away from Comley, however breaking up play, putting a foot in and being that physical presence is a lot easier than Hutch’s role technically.

The hardest thing in football is to score or create and that’s ultimately Hutch’s job, so when he doesn’t do this regularly he will be judged.

For me the frustration lies with his concentration, as there will be games when his touch just isn’t there and every second touch is a tackle.

He can try clever through balls all day long for me and if they’re not quite coming off then I can’t really complain. But when the basics aren’t being done right and defenders are dispossessing him without having to break sweat then it becomes a frustration.

I think we can all agree that when he’s on it he’s one of the best in the league. His stats speak for themselves.

If he can bring a bit more consistency and bite to his game then let’s be honest, he won’t be playing in league 2.

Tbf Comley doesn’t even work harder than hutch
To say hutch doesn’t work hard is just silly and unfair, he presses and runs his knackers off. Just because he doesn’t tackle as much and is a little less brave in 50/50s means nothing
Without Comley we’d have stirk Whod do a pretty similar job
Without hutch Whod we have Whod do anywhere near Aswell ?

To be honest Daniels is being harshly judged based on his own very high standards and is almost taken for granted. For the majority of the season he’s been once again one of the best in the division and if Manny Monthe can step into league 1 and do ok, DD would be a top performer even in that league.

Unfortunately we seem to judge out better players on the basis that unless they’re exceptional the been poor and our average players are lauded for regularly playing average.

Hutchinson for me by a country mile for POS. For YPOS it’s more open in my mind, but I’m inclined towards Smith.

I’d go Hutch too. His ups and downs can be frustrating but he’s our biggest talent and almost certain to play higher up.

To be honest I hate how these votes take place when the most important part of the season is yet to be played! Just do it closer to the end.

This is true. Even when he is having one of those games where he goes from being our most technically gifted player, to looking like he’s never controlled a ball in his life, the effort is always there. I suspect, sometimes, he may be trying a little too hard and trying to force something to happen, which in and of itself is no bad thing, particularly when he’s relied on so much to be our only spark. I suspect he feels he needs to be.

I understand why he’s so popular with some. He’s easily our most entertaining player, and plays in a position that allows him to contribute memorable moments, but it is tiresome when even the most fair and light critique is met with howls of derision.

If the vote allowed say a 1 to 3 he’d probably make third based on what I have seen. Between him and Daniels for 2-3.

I’ve not seen enough of Comley’s period in the side, but it feels a bit unfair to give it to a player who has played so little. It is great to hear the positive reports on him though, particularly as my main issue with him last season was his terrible use of the ball, kicking the ball out of play under no pressure whatsoever at times, while others were pilloried for that. It sounds like that has improved and with his ball winning ability that has always been there sounds really good.

Edit: I’ve just looked up Comley’s stats and he’s actually racked up the 6th most amount of minutes in the squad! In fairness to him that probably is a fair amount to go on.

Hutch by a distance for player of the season.
McEntee the same for young player, had he not missed so many games, so I’d go with Smith for young player as he’s managed to dislodge a very good keeper and has continued to keep him out.

McEntee, had he not been injured, would have been a certainty for young player and a shout for POTS.

I still do not really see Smith as being exceptional. He has made a few great saves but also a few awful mistakes. That is understandable in a young keeper but I do not think it is enough to be YPOTS. Has he played more matches than McEntee? Probably Okagbue for me - he has improved throughout the season and stepped up when DD and the Priest were out.

McEntee and Okagbue have both played more matches and minutes.

I’d still go for Smith though. Goalkeeping mistakes are highlighted but he’s dislodged Evans and has shown he is a good shot stopper with decent distribution. McEntee has one of the bottom half PPG in the squad and I don’t think it is a coincidence that our form improved when we, perish the thought, played Midfielders in midfield.
