Port Vale Rivalry

Grew up in Pelsall too as you know mate and still live here, I have a massive dislike for Villa for the same reasons.

For me Hatred for other teams stems mainly from growing up with other fans (at school especially ) for me it’s West Brom and wolves. The Shrewsbury derby grew on me overtime following walsall but I love to see wolves and West Brom fall flat. When we beat them too the gloating to family members you can’t beat it. I couldn’t care less about vale, Stoke, Crewe.

He’s 78 last time I saw him about 12 months ago he was still golfing 3 times a week ā€˜ smashing lad .

I went to Sneyd between 87 and 90 and then on to Pelsall in 1991, sneyd was mostly made up of dingles but tbf they did go to games there was about 4 in our year that went to Walsall every week, when we moved to Pelsall I was surrounded by Villa fans who hardly ever went.
There was plenty more Saddlers at Pelsall I remember mark, Dave Law, Tidman Bros, there was plenty more but 33 years ago takes its toll.
My lad was 4 when he come to his first game with me and my daughter was 5 he’s now 21 and daughter 19 they never miss along with 3 nephews.

Yes. Buckley’s goal was also a bit special. He had the ball on the byline in the penalty area. Turned inwards away from the byline , and just when everyone on the pitch and in the crowd though he was going to lay it across for someone running in, suddenly pivoted , and put it past the keeper at the near post.

If you could see lol
And after the game my mates car wouldn’t start so we had to roll it down hill while being chased lol

Sorry. I didn’t check the post you were referring to. It can’t be 1980s ,because Atthey was long gone by then. Probably 75/6, and no fog.

The game I was talking about was definitely foggy so must have been a different one, Nick Athey was just before my time

The game in the fog was an FA Cup game wasn’t it? For some reason I have it in my mind it was played on a Sunday. 0-0 draw, although there could have been goals and you wouldn’t have seen them. Beat them in the replay 2-1.

Would have been around 1985 at a guess.

That was what I was thinking, it was a Sunday game and it was cold and misty. I think Sjoke were at home on the Saturday so the cup match was shifted to the next day. No messing about in those days, the replay was just two days later on the Tuesday.
We played them again the following season but got it done first time, at FP.

I remember a very foggy game that ended in a draw, so must have been that game - December 1985.
Here’s a list of Vale’s record against us. 1966 to 1986 is the best bit.

Yeah that’s probably the one Blazing, getting older and can’t remember things that I used to :joy:

They did the double over us in 2013-14 and that was the first time since 1899-00. That can’t be correct can it? I must be mistaken, or there’s some matches missing.

I can’t be looking properly, what have I missed?

I bow to your memory . Mine has got fogged , but Nick Athey as far as I can remember scored direct from a corner in the fog once lol :man_shrugging::man_shrugging:

Could well have also happened, that would be before I started going.

You’re half right. Nick Atthey scored from a corner, but no fog. Unless he did it previously to 75/6 but it would be a bit of a coincidence. I’m pretty sure you’re conflating two events.

No, you read it right.

Yes, i broke down close to the Victoria Ground so we had to continue in a taxi. Pretty sure you couldnt see the goals at the other end cus of the fog. After the game we had to go back in another taxi to the car and then change the fan belt in the freezing cold. I have no idea what the result was
