Would @Sephiroth92 be prepared to give any credit to young Tommy for the clean sheet and the excellent save, or would he prefer to continue the Halloween themed witch-hunt?
One double save doesn’t change my opinion On him jees lol . I’ve seen a lot of poor keepers make the odd good save .
He needs to be consistently good and reliable , not just one good save in 4 games
The answer is “no” I remember a young Jimmy Walker making a few mistakes in his early career. Indeed he had to battle for his place with Trevor Wood and lost out once or twice.
Trevor Wood was a decent keeper.
I remember his performance against Leeds United in the FA Cup.
Fortunately the vast majority of Saddlers fans are firmly behind young Tommy. Plenty of applause for him pre and post match and a notable roar for his name when the team sheets were read out (I found it curious the largest roar seemed to be reserved for Jamie Jellis).
Think he’s turning into a fans favourite that’s why, and Barrett also.
I recall that too. He was a good keeper .
Seemed to have a short career. Before us spent a career as no 2 at vale bar one season. Had one season as no1 while jimmy recovered from bost leg, then slowly got less games. Then 3 seasons in ireland
He was born in the Channel Islands, which qualified him for any of the home nations. He was, I think, in the NI squad once or twice.
You forgot Ian Turner who had 2 spells with us either side of picking up an FA Cup winners medal with Southampton (keeping a clean sheet in the final).
Ince wasn’t that great a keeper. A decent enough keeper for the level we were at.
What he was very good at was commanding his area and coming for crosses.
As a shot stopper we’ve had a number that were much better.
The big weakness in his game was his kicking. Quite litterally 9 out of 10 of his kicks went straight out of play turning the ball over and therefore putting us under more preasure than we would have been had his kicking been better.
Yes, agree there Locky.
Keepers at this level will be good at certain aspects of goal keeping and poor at others … that’s why they are playing in these lower leagues, if we had a keeper that was great at everything we would be either in the championship or higher or they would be snapped up by clubs higher up.
Yep agree, at this level a great keeper is one that is good in one area and adequate at the others without them being a particular weakness, otherwise as you say they’d generally be higher up the leagues.
He threw better than he kicked, sure he used to get them well into the opposition half
