The Mat Sadler Thread

Without a marked improvement on the more entertaining attacking football that we were promised with an upturn in where we are in the table, which we would be pushing for promotion, then anything trivela does off the field will count for nothing!!!. Must get the football side of things right ASAP

I’m really proud to support Walsall FC, I love the club and just take huge amounts of pride in it.

I’ve realised that I don’t even care if we’re rubbish. I can 100% temporarily live with that, but only on the condition that I know that nobody at all accepts it as something that can continue.

We’ve been up against it for years and fought tooth and nail to hold on to what we have and hope for better. That’s Walsall FC and I love it. If we’re actually good, that’s amazing. A real bonus.

At the moment, we’re crap and it’s fine…but when the manager accepts yesterday as a reaction to being 3-0 down at home at half time to Newport County and acts like we’ve righted the wrong I absolutely can’t accept that. It makes me angry.

As a club, we fight. Even when people inside the club have been causing the problems, everybody else has rallied round and stuck together, but it’s different now.

The thing that has caused me to stop enjoying being a Walsall fan is that there’s just no pride any more. The manager and a section of the fans just accept when the wheels fall off and try to twist things to make it sound like it’s ok. It’s just weak and not what I enjoy being part of and its not what I believe Walsall FC should be.

We should target promotion and if we don’t get there, hold ourselves to account and work out how to get there next year. Stick together, fight, have total commitment to being the best we can be (even if that’s not very good) and work hard at all times and I’ll accept whatever happens.

Low standards, burying our heads in the sand and shrugging because Newport/Crawley/Sutton are stronger than results suggest and they’re well drilled? I just hate seeing Walsall that way.

That’s what’s driving me away. I can’t change it, so I’ll just wait until somebody with a bit of backbone and total commitment to high standards takes the wheel and gives me something to get behind.

@Andy_Petterson correct - for once.

Mostly uttered, it seems, by folk who could only dream about reaching the lofty heights of being a PE teacher which is, of course, a highly respected professional position.

It’s just a pathetic insult isn’t it really? Whatever the rights and wrongs of his management, Mat Sadler has had a career as an elite sportsman (it IS elite to earn your living as a professional footballer at any level, very few manage it) and has served his time under managers at Walsall as a coach.

Forget the eternal debate and stats analysis vs previous incumbents … Sadlers is arrogant, deluded and tactically inept. He spouts such drivel at post match interviews and continues to steal a living because decision makers are largely 1000s of miles across the ocean. The pain and underachievement is simply a pre requisite of following our beloved Walsall FC … BUT this clown needs to go now… BB read the room please!

I think you can argue it is bad football, but I would not agree it is negative, not in the way Flynn’s team played (don’t even go there with Dutton’s.) Many of the games have been exciting - last night’s was a bit dull but it was still better than most of the games we have seen in recent years. One positive is that we have had a few penalties this season; in recent years we hardly had any because we were never in the opposition box.

It’s really laughable isn’t it?
By all means critique his performance in his current role, but trying to disrespect his career and achievements is bizarre.
If only 25% of the population were such high achievers, the country wouldn’t be the shit show that it currently is.

What signs? I for the life of me can’t see any tanglible signs of us being competitive in this league. Even less so if Matt Sadler continues in the job with his specialty of playing with no known plan or system.

I think your optimism is built on little more than bare hope.

Funny debate on WFHYS at the moment apparently DJ is lazy and was lucky last season according to one of the club apologists on there :rofl:

If you cannot see we have some good players then I cannot help you. I have posted numerous times we need 2 quality forwards and a physical midfielder . If we get those we will be challenging at the top . More a matter for Trivela than MS .

You could put Harry Kane up top and he’d struggle with the non existent service from our midfield and WB’s.

some just wont say a word against them mate its bonkers.

I think you are overestimating what we have signed up for next season.

To me Hutchinson and McEntee are the two players with real quality. Very very likely Hutchinson won’t be here next season, 13 goals from midfield already, the vultures will be out already.

We play with wing backs but we don’t have any that are nearly good enough. Gordon has some good attributes, unfortunately he rarely stops a cross coming in and his crossing is abysmal, can’t get it above knee height most of the time.

Complete new forward line required, assuming DJ is finished with us. You did mention forwards to be fair.

We have some okay players left after all that, but other than McEntee that really stands out, let’s hope he can stay fit next season, we have missed him. Still a fair bit of surgery needs doing to the team when you take a close look at what we have for next season.

The argument against that point is the reverse fixtures.

Got beat.

Spaffed a 2 goal lead after probably the most dominating first half of football we’ve played for some time.

Got outclassed.

Took a penalty to get in front and then defnded a 1-0 for it to back fire… exactly the same as last night.

Cant comment on Notts County as we are still to play them at home.

For every Wrexham (H) or Grimsby (A) theres a Sutton (A) or a Newport (H).

Its isnt improvement, its as someone said above - just bobbing along.

Maybe I am but there isn’t much difference in the teams in this Division. 2 good forwards could make a big difference. Incidentally I would drop this 3 at the back system .I have disliked it principally because at our level you will rarely find wing backs of the right quality.

I agree with you on both counts there. You can achieve a lot by being organised and having a regular scorer, it was working for Flynn.

Totally agree about the formation and wing backs too.

You may be pleased to hear then that we are favourites to sign the promising youngster Oliver Twist from Mudfog Marauders who play down in Kent somewhere.

Believe we made him an offer but he asked for more .!

The next three months is a big test for Sadler’s motivation qualities.

Already you feel the squad is starting to clock off a bit, 17 points clear of bottom two but endless teams above even if 7th isn’t that far off points wide so basically a replica of pretty much all the other seasons down here.

Can he prevent a horror run like Flynn presided over this time last year. That started with endless low scoring draws and then then it was some terrible defeats at Rochdale and Harrogate that resulted in the sack.

It’s pretty sobering to think that even with some of the excellent wins in December the team never actually got into the top half of the league so it feels pretty unlikely now with more mid table form.

If there are no expectations from people even to finish 12th in the fourth tier then that is simply a chronic lack of ambition so we’ll see what the next three months bring, a strong finish is a must just to give a bit more optimism going into next year.
