The Mat Sadler Thread

Yes, a few poor results and some will turn against him. Some may even want him to fail. A review at the season’s end is the way to judge.

But, it is true that he seems to have generated a great team spirit - and Waddock and Byfield contribute to that (look at the way Byfield went to DJ after the game) - and we are being entertained. Yesterday’s game was a cracker.

It may all fade away and we should keep our feet on the ground but let’s not be over negative either.

I dunno what more people want sometimes…

To be honest Sadler has put together a side that means i enjoy going to the match again these days. Much more than the dark days of Flynn Ball. Will Sadler take us up i dunno, but its gonna be a good ride…

Purely talking about how he has knit the squad (and fans) together and doesn’t show players up to the press if there are errors made. Obviously there will be bad performances, it’s not perfect but the team spirit is better than any recent season.

I’m proud to support this team, they fight for the shirt and the clib and appreciate the fans ,finally after years i feel we have our club back and future looks bright

This season, I like what I see. I do think we need to be more clinical and take advantage when we are in the ascendency but we are doing well and, arguably, our performances suggest we could/should have at least one point more. Sadler seems to have assembled a very good squad and engendered a good spirit around the club. At the moment, I like what I see.
Of course, Christmas is the best time for an interim genuine appraisal of how we’re doing; then it’s Easter to see if we’re real contenders. The signs are good. And I like what I see.

I think we should give him till Christmas at least .
It’s not bad considering he only fits us in after he done his PE teaching and some property development.
Think how good we’d be if he was full time and the budget hadn’t been cut

One thing we have definitively improved on over the Sadler reign is discipline.

I was one of those who was very narky around our discipline at the start of last season. It was like the players were finding out about the new guidelines in live play rather than having them coached. Meant we picked up loads of bookings and at least one (Hussey) sending off as a result.

This season, the new fad is being booked for preventing a free kick being taken/kicking the ball away. I think they had two bookings yesterday for it. Don’t think we’ve had one all season.

This has been very important. We used to have serial offenders, such as Knowles, White and, the maestro himself, Labadie, who got booked most games.

White has three bookings in five games since his move to the US

Four if you include his flights :grinning:

Will he be up for Manager of the Month for September, or would an “Outstanding” from OFSTED be more appropriate :joy:

He’s obviously making the most useful subs:

Seems like he really is improving tactically

He’s got a plan, and he’s got backing. Our owners now are so far apart from Bonser, who’d throw the manager under the bus every time to deflect from the criticism he got, whether it was the right thing to do or not. His timing was his agenda, not the club’s, and I believe Trivela have this the other way round, because they’re interested more in the club than the rent.

Yes, they want to protect their own loan repayments, but doesn’t this feel as different as it could possibly be from the latter years of Uncle Jeff, after the Colin Lee debacle exposed his limitations.

This mean we’re in Europe next season?

Credit has to go to the whole management group not just Sadler , as I tried to point out last year when Sadler faced criticism the model Trivela have imposed is closer to that of a franchise in MLS or USL , that is what Jordan knows and that is what we have. Sadler maybe the head coach but he is cog in a larger wheel that stretches across the Atlantic.

The most important decision Boycott and Jordan made was getting rid of Flynn and the old management style which Pomlett naively agreed to when Flynn came in.

The Boycott letters laid down a plan and so far we are living up to the dream he wrote down in June 2023. We should all remember that although Trivela have been in the picture for what seems like an eternity they only really took control of the footballing side in April 2023, so we are only 18 months into the money ball plan , the wheels could fall off yet, however I feel the club is in safe hands both on and off the pitch. Long may it continue.

Totally agree. It’s a top-down reset.

Are you trying to turn this into yet another Brexit thread? :joy:

I am slightly surprised that no one has thought of a European competition for the second tier teams, although probably not for the 4th, where the English teams would win it every year. In most other countries, the 4th tier is a low standard.
