The Mat Sadler Thread

How could that post offend someone?

Canā€™t see Sadler getting the award after we conceded 8 goals in the past 2 games.

Those games were in October

Thatā€™s normally when they sack their manager.

Such a lack of ambition.

Itā€™s an uptick on
ā€˜Incremental progress is the planā€™ last season.

OPTA have Walsall top of their expected points table

The also predict Walsall to finish 6th

Do they give a rationale as to why, if weā€™re number one now on expected points, weā€™ll be sixth at the end of the season? I canā€™t see one. What do they think will change? Is it based on the quality of the opposition so far?

At the end of last season, Iā€™d have had your hand off for sixth at the end of this season .Iā€™d be a bit disappointed with it now. Itā€™s all pretty inexact stuff though.

Would you take sixth if offered it now?

Thatā€™s the only rationale I can think of, weā€™ve only played one of the current top 7 currently and that was BradfordCity at home.

It is a bit vague but I think itā€™s to do with the ā€˜power rankingā€™ they assign to each team.

Their predicted final placings correspond closely to this.

Here is what I found about how they derive the power rankings.

https://theanalyst.com/2023/01/power-rankings-your-club-ranked#:~:text=Our%20Power%20Rankings%20utilise%20a,for%20both%20men%20and%20women.

I suspect Fleetwoods 6-2 win against us goes a long way to explaining why they are top of the power rankings and predicted to come top (according to OPTA)

Thats a really good question KC. A bit like Deal or no Deal. :joy:

Although thereā€™s a very strong case for saying Walsall have been the best team in L2 so far (and so it would be foolish to accept the play offs) we have only played teams in the lower half of the table and Im not sure id say we are far superior to at least 5 or 6 other sides in the division.

So I would take the box, I mean 6th place, and hope wed get to Wembley and win there.

Id have been happy with 6th at the start of the season.

I wouldnā€™t take anything now. Iā€™d rather enjoy watching the games as they come and see where we get to.
Itā€™s a long summer

Thatā€™s a valid way of looking at it. The Leicester game was like that for me. It was one of the most enjoyable 0-0s Iā€™ve ever seen. And, having seen us more than match them for 90 minutes, I wasnā€™t actually that disappointed after the shoot-out.

I think Sadler now has to step up again heā€™s done a sterling job up to now but he has to hone is skills on team management because we will have a massive squad to choose from so he will have to keep everyone happy hope heā€™s up to it :crossed_fingers:

Well house sales tend to drop off after the end of summer, and the kids are on half term next week, so he should have a bit of time on his hands to concentrate on doing just that.
