I would not agree with all those ratings but it’s right that we have not done well signing experienced players since relegation. But we did do in the past, notably Kevin Wilson, who had no pace but was a major factor in our promotion from League 2.
Maybe the game is faster now or maybe we have done much worse than others.
I think it is the quality of player that actually drops down the leagues to finish their career nowadays. Even players that have had pretty average careers are still very wealthy men. Also the levels of professionalism from the players.
Look at Wilson’s career compared to those that el_nombre mentioned. Lot’s of other examples too I reckon, Pointon, Brightwell, Mountfield, all really professional and had top flight careers.
The games changed quite a bit since then. I’m not saying there are no good players over 33, I’m saying I’d rather concentrate on bringing in players in their prime that will reach that age with us, or with sell on value.
Madden is a bit of a mercenary signed for Scunny when they were chucking money about Fleetwood when they were doing the same and Stockport in the National league shouldn’t be a surprise he’s gone there.
Can’t say I know much about him but looks like he’s had an interesting career. Poached by Stuttgart as a junior, Represented England at three age groups, and although he played mostly centre back last year has also players Right Back, Left Back, Central Midfield, Right Mid and Defensive Midfielder in the past.
Who knows but would be an interesting (realistic) one.
People mentioning players who did well For us as old men
Look at how long ago that was lol
We have been awful at signing experienced players for ages, all take us like the mugs we are and pull our trousers down for a last payday
Clarke , ward , Tomlin ,Hussey , Jarvis , Liddle , Matt etc al embarrassment to there trade and should be ashamed of themselves for taking the piss out of Walsall fc
When was the last time we signed someone 32 or older Who was good 2001?
Walker in 2011, not sure how good he was but massive improvement from Brain who was playing before that. Macken around then too wasn’t awful but was playing in a rubbish team.
Mooney in 2007 too.
To be fair, I wouldn’t class Matt as shameful or was taking the piss. Had a fair few injuries and has looked one of the more impactful players the past six months when he’s been fit enough to play.
Ones I can immediately think of in my time watching Walsall that I can think of in there 30s:-
Colin Methvan
Kevin Wilson
Richard Green
Jeff (only one) Peron
Roger Boli
Neil Pointon
Andy Rammell
Neil Emblen
Vinny Samways
Jon Macken
Adam Chambers
Just ones that immediately spring to mind, it really does depend on the individual because we have had some dross on a last meal ticket in there career…. Stephen Hughes another one
I think an experienced goalkeeper would be a good move.
Etheridge, Sawyers, Paterson are all players in their 30s who I would be absolutely delighted to see return to the club. However, I do accept that there is little chance of this due to wage demands.
