W 1-0 vs Tranmere Rovers (H) - League Two - Sat 16th Dec, 3pm

Surely it’s not Lady Croc in the undercroft ? Please be aware of blaggards and men of little virtue for they will not think twice of relieving Lady Croc of her precious pearls and gems, hopefully your footmen will be close at hand to protect her. Please advise Lady Croc that she will have to bid farewell to the paupers in reasonable time as her carriage may be affected by slow moving peasants and she will be required to be in her throne position by 2:40 pm, I do hope arrangements have been made for her Ladyship to peruse along the halfway line to acknowledge the love and support of the gentry and commoners? Please respectfully remind her to wave back to the fans or even politely applaud back or the peasants may revolt at end of play by showering the ladies carriage with burnt hot dogs and stale pukka pies. I sincerely hope all goes well.

I’m not comparing them to Luton, I’m just saying that managers and their teams have always come up against opponents with different styles. It isn’t something that Mat Sadler has suddenly had to deal with. Likewise top level players have always generally been technically better than those at lower levels. Yes the game has evolved in lots of ways, but I don’t think that’s given rise to those two facts. If we are at the stage where we are going into games against Alfreton thinking about how to combat them then how does that sit with any notion of evolving our own “front foot” style? It literally contradicts it.

Without disparaging Alfreton, their tactics seemed to be hoof it/throw it up to the forward players.

Sadler seems to be developing a style where we gain possession high up the pitch. Against Notts county this worked well.

But you literally cant apply those tactics if the opposition just launch the ball forward like Alfreton. So it begs the question what do you do. From what i saw Walsall sort of played in a similar way. It wasnt great to watch but it got us through.

Of course the ideal would be to develop a range of styles and tactics and the depth of players to implement as and when. A Smith/Buckley side could have swept Alfreton aside, but it would seem harsh to expect this from Sadler when he has been working on the high press tactics, plus players were tired after playing Notts.

I dont know what you think Sadler could have done differently?

I can understand your view, to a point, regarding high press being negated due to the opposition just hoofing it long but, two points for me .

The pressure you apply to the ball player will make it much more difficult for them to choose where to hoof it and…

I would expect us to recover the ball more often but, more importantly, having recovered the ball, I’d like us to try and keep hold of it for longer and get ‘on the front foot’ that way. If the possession stats from Tuesday’s game as quoted on here are correct, then that is shocking when playing at home against a team two divisions below us. No excuses!

Andy makes good points. Over the years, there have been teams who find (relative) success by hoofing the ball forward - the original Wimbledon spring to mind but there were many others. Stoke caused havoc with Delap and Crouch. Even the best teams used to struggle. Nowadays, I doubt it could work in the PL but in the lower leagues it can, particularly if you toss in a poor pitch and some robust defenders.

I do not think a press against the Fashanu-led Wimbledon would have done much good.

I agree with much of this, but just on

Is it not valid, having won the ball, to push for goal as quickly as possible? It would seem to negate the point of the high press to then hold onto the ball, I.e. let the opposition reorganize.

Well even though i have watched every game on Ifollow, and i know how poor we have been, i will be able to make a better judgment on Saturday, actually being there
I know it is not the EXACT same watching it on the small screen, but it is pretty close
I am expecting nothing less than either a win, or at least a very well contested draw, with everybody playing their hearts out, i just want to be entertained and get value for money

If earing was fit he would start

If we play like we did last Saturday we should win.
My heart says we will win my head says a draw.

When I say keep hold of the ball longer, I mean more than 1 or 2 passes.
