W 4-2 vs Tranmere Rovers (H) – Sat 20th Sept, 3.00pm (League Two)

Apologies for the tardiness. Exam week at work, so been very busy.
Yes, I’m one of those woke lefties that works in education.

The Saddlers welcome the Rovers to the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

The Opposition

Tranmere spent much of last season in the bottom of the table, despite inflicting an early loss on the Saddlers at Prenton Park which was televised on Sky TV. They finished the season in 20th place just 9 points off relegation and will be looking to improve drastically this season.

The Proposition

The Saddlers will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the League to 5 games. Daniel Kanu getting his 2nd goal of the season in the last game against Fleetwood will be highly likely to start and try to add to his tally.

With Jamie Jellis receiving a suspended 5 month betting ban which resolves the FA investigation, Saddler fans will hope he can now concentrate on his football and return to his performances of early last season.

Tranmere are currently 16th in the table and looking for a first win in the last 3 league games. Last time out they drew with Newport County at Prenton Park. This would have been a win had it not been for a Newport equaliser in the last few minutes.

The First Time

The first meeting between the sides, was in Division Three (North) on the **10th September 1921**, which resulted in a 1-0 away win for Walsall.

The Worst Time

A 6-0 hammering away at Tranmere on the **30th April 1927** in Division Three (North).

The Last Time

The Saddlers last meeting with Tranmere was on the **11th January 2025** with a 5-1 home win for us.

Played for both

Kieron Morris currently plays for Oldham Athletic, and has a rather overprotective mom.

Morris was born in Hereford and grew up in Leominster, Herefordshire. Part of the Hereford United Centre of Excellence, he played youth football for local club Leominster Minors before being spotted by Manchester United’s scouting network. Morris trialled with Manchester United frequently over a few years, but a contract offer never materialised. He eventually began his career with Walsall and made his professional debut on 28 August 2013 in a 3–1 defeat against Stoke City in the Football League Cup.

During the 2012–13 season Morris spent time on loan at Conference North club Worcester City, making eight appearances and scoring one goal, and the following season he had a loan spell at Leamington, where he played four league games. In January 2014 Morris, along with fellow Walsall youth prospects Matt Preston and Danny Griffiths joined up with Icelandic side ÍBV—managed by former Walsall player Sigurður Ragnar Eyjólfsson—on trial. All three played in a 2–1 loss against Stjarnan in a pre-season tournament, but were not taken on by ÍBV and subsequently returned to Walsall.

Morris joined Wrexham on loan until the end of the season on 30 January 2015. During his loan spell with the Red Dragons, he was impressive as he scored a brace in Wrexham’s FA Trophy Semi Final 2nd leg victory over Torquay United on 28 February 2015 as well as the winning goal in the Cross-border derby against Chester on 7 March 2015.

He was released by Walsall at the end of the 2018–19 season, before signing for Tranmere Rovers on 26 June 2019.

In May 2020, Morris was named ’ Tranmere Player of the Season’ for the 2019–20 season.

Morris signed a new two-year contract with the option for a third year at the end of the 2021–22 season.

On 27 June 2025, after his contract ended with Tranmere Rovers, Morris signed with newly promoted EFL League Two club Oldham Athletic.

Also:

Andy Cook, Peter Clarke, Morgan Ferrier, Joe Murphy, Manny Monthe, Lewis Warrington, Kevin Cooper…

Comment if you know any more!!!

Lump On

After the 5-1 thumping for them in our last meeting at the Bescot, we’d hope for the same again. Our overall record against them is slightly in our favour at W39/D16/L28.

Lump Off

Given their current form, I’d say we shouldn’t have to worry about them…. But this is Walsall and we know how we can play against teams that are struggling.

Goal Tally (sponsored by Owly McOwlface)

Daniel Kanu - 2

Evan Weir - 1

Aaron Pressley - 1

Harrison Burke - 1

Great preview as ever Steve.

I think we’re due a bit of bad luck. On paper we should win this but something tells me we’ll slip up. Really hope I’m wrong. Maybe it’s because we haven’t got such a good record against the sides lower down in the table - think this is the first time we’ve played someone in the bottom half? - Apart from maybe Barnet who were much fancied before the start of the season.

2-2 - last gasp equaliser from Jamma.

UTS.

580 away fans’ tickets sold as of last night. Thought they’d bring more.

I was working on the theory that you were busy as it’s new student/starters season.
Having just done some preparation stuff for UPP at Reading.

They are having a sulk cus they can’t bring their drum! (thank god).

As hard as I’ve tried, I can’t forget that Ash Taylor “played” for us and them.

My area doesn’t involve student recruitment or any faculty and academic stuff (although we have lots of contact with them for various things).
We’re more assessment, exams and results.

So the middle and end part of the student journey, rather than the beginning.

To be honest, home sales are slow too and possibly below 5k Saddlers for the first time since December 2024 (Barrow). First match of the season for me and looking forward to it.

Tranny are much better than position suggests (they have a game in hand) so a 1-1 draw in front of 5,500 ish.

Yes, another great preview.

Others that have played for both: Nick Henry, Ash Taylor and John Manning. Manning played against Everton at Goodison Park. We lost 2-1, with Mick Evans getting one for us at the death, but Bill Moore was so angry with Manning, I don’t think he played for us again.

Hate to say it - but I feel a 3-0 incoming. We always seem to have their number at the Bezla.

Edrissa Sonko. Was he the player Dickie Dosh took off at halftime because of his fast?

By the way, who needs to buy a programme with previews like this?
