Walsall FC v Chelsea under 8’s EFL Trophy 3/12/2019

I’m guessing you weren’t there ?

Nope. Which is why I can’t comment on the performance. I can comment on how frustrating it is to pick up injuries in such a needless fixture though.

Lets hope the league starts meaning something then eh

If the game had been a behind closed door match that had been arranged to help build up some players fitness or those coming back from injury, or for any other number of possible reasons, and an injury happened in that game, would it have been meaningless then?

You can’t legislate for when an injury happens. Harsh to give it more weight because of what me or occasion it was. If nothing else, see it as a warm up / training / recovery match, and someone got injured. As others have said, it is disappointing, we appear to have plenty that can cover there, and he will be back in about 6 weeks hopefully.

But you wouldn’t do that with your first team in the middle of December! The fixture list is already packed and you have to prioritise. If we were playing behind closed doors friendlies at this time of the year, yes, I’d think that was stupid too. Same answer I just gave to somebody else who pointed to training:

This was just another fixture in a now pointless competition that was completely unnecessary to risk. And by the way that’s not (just) Clarke’s fault. I’d say that’s more on the EFL for making this competition so meaningless that you can’t even drum up a 1000 person crowd for it.

Just out of interest are some posters on commission to keep typing the following:

‘Ian Holloway.’

‘Coaching badges.’

No I ain’t and Chunk and I have had a bit of banter over Ian Holloway as I wanted him appointed before Clarke, and he ( Clarke ) keeps telling us he has the coaching badges in the world and I’ve seen better non league teams coached better than we look over the weekend and as I go home and away most weekends i’m entitled to an opinion

For me this competition is the thin end of the wedge. If PL teams are seen as being accepted then it’s the first step for them entering the lower leagues, and that would ruin lower league football IMHO. That’s why I won’t support this competition.

No one said you were not entitled to an opinion

You must be seen as you mentioned it

How is it needless I wasn’t aware that the club has a choice , and as such we should give it our best shot, which to DCs and the players credit they have.

It’s a trip to Wembley if you get to the final what’s not to like about that??

Because it’s a competition nobody cares about any more, and a vehicle to introduce youth teams into the football league rather than any sort of meaningful achievement.

But I’ve already told you that, there’s no point going around in circles. If you disagree fine, but the attendance and common sense aspect of being in a competition with youth teams in it doesn’t change, unfortunately. That’s just a fact.

I doubt I have earned as much as you chap in the commission stakes

Don’t forget the promotions too. Think Clarke’s on commission himself for that one.

Totally get where you’re coming from but personally I don’t think that will ever happen though Tinned. The EFL is well established in its current format, and after many teething problems with the “pyramid” in the late 80’s and early 90’s I think it works pretty well now. The Associate Members Cup, Group Cup, EFL Trophy or whatever you want to call it has always been more in a state of flux since its inception in 84. I remember our first game in it against Northampton, about a week after we played at home in front of circa 20k v Liverpool, and remember being dissappointed with a crowd over 3k! All of this chopping and changing over the years has been to try and invigorate a competition that save for the last few stages hasn’t attracted decent crowds for years. This latest experiment has failed spectacularly on that score, even more so than the inclusion of Conference teams a few years ago so in a way I think that’s a good warning to the powers that be to leave well alone. Anyway hopefully the last remaining 23’s teams will be out and the competition will resemble what it was originally set out to be from the last 16 onwards, if Leicester and Man U go tonight I think that just leaves Man City in, and we can hardly begrudge them being as they knocked Shrewsbury out.

To be fair I thought all things considered , the time of the year some ‘supporters’ apathy and miss informed perception of the competition , that the crowd was reasonable considering we only had 1849 home supporters at the Oxford third round FA cup game on a Saturday afternoon .

So double? 1849 is piss poor itself. I wouldn’t paint getting half that as reasonable to be honest.

Oh yeah? Enlighten me please?

You are obviously a reasonably educated person so why do you always have to scrape the bottom of the barrel with your argument when you know you are wrong , you know very well the point im making regarding the size of attendance for the respective competitions .
I would have thought you were better than this
