Where the cloudbase is always low on the hills…
Always considered myself more Mercian than English anyway… Hate those Normans and their cul-de-sacs.
Indeed, I always fancied starting a “Freedom for Mercia Campaign”. Trying to liberate us and the Angles from the Saxo-Norman hegemony of Wessex centric England.
Unfortunately Mercia does include Londonborough, as it was known when we owned it.
I’m conflicted, being a Mercian at heart with definite Norman roots on my mother’s side. Given how much she hates the French I’m very tempted to get her to do an Ancestry DNA test…
I think the sticking point will be Oxford, ever since we gave that up to Wessex they have been bolder and bolder undermining our position in London. We need a Penda style revolution.
Might do a FOI request into the death of Athelflaed, certain Edward murdered her and it wasn’t investigated properly!
Wasn’t Tamworth the capital of Mercia (and by extension England) in the 10th century?
Yes. Centre of the church too which was a big deal back then. Wessex split Tamworth into 3 once they turned Mercia into a client kingdom because it threatened the ‘unity’ of England.
Archbishopric at Lichfield as well…
So much good stuff about the club currently.
Deserves some good gates over the Xmas period.
Also hopefully a non league side at home next round as you actually feel this season could be the year where this side is capable of pulling off a shock in the third round. Or at least being competitive away to a decent prem team.
Great to have a decent gate and a great cup-tie. Potentially a non-descript first round game.
Would be interesting to know if it was financially a plus or minus but progressing to the next round hopefully makes it a worthwhile effort.
Obviously having a half-decent team is key but good to see opportunities to highlight the profile of the club being explored.
I’d say they made more overall. I bet we’d have struggled to get 4k at normal prices, Bolton probably wouldn’t have brought nearly as many. The queues for food and beer were massive even as the second half was kicking off.
Plus it got people there that may come back. I was listening to a couple with two kids on the train on the way back, and the kids were asking to go again. They were only little ones too, about 5 and 7 at a guess. Good times.
A good point.
A lot of times in the past when we’ve put deals on and got a bumper crowd, we have a shocker of a game which doesn’t encourage many to come back.
Yep. I mean it doesn’t really matter what the club does if we were playing football like the end of Flynn’s time, hardly any attacks, no excitement, or real hope.
That was a really great cup tie today. If we hadn’t won I’d still have enjoyed it, but a late winner made it special.
Be nice to think there might be about 8k there next week. Surely Crewe will bring more than there usual few hundred as they’re doing well, the family stand is well on the way to being sold out due to one of the deals the club does with schools and we should get a bit of a boost on usual sales from today
Oh joy! Still better than the Pallet Track stand we were today.
Some miserable sods in there now i know why i havent been in there for about 25 years
Brilliant.
It seems the Gillingham game is still on which surprises me but that is ripe for a creative ticket offer if there hasn’t already been one announced to tempt some back who were wowed by today’s offering.
Can’t see it that soon but it would be nice i just hope it doesn’t piss season ticket holders off if they do more cheap ticket offers the ones i know and i know a fair few aren’t bothered if it makes a better atmosphere and brings in more fans I’d be very tempted at this moment in time by a half season ticket if they do them this year.
A bigger than average crowd but the traffic after the game was horrendous all over, not just in Bescot Crescent. Can’t all have been avoiding the Wednesbury flood, so anyone know what the problem was?
Can see them doing a several game deal
Crewe, Notts County, Bromley, possibly Gillingham, Barrow, Doncaster and Newport before the new year
