Walsall line up

Huge reputation…sorry to go all belts and braces on you Sir Crod but he’s played about 10 games above league 2 in his career!

Of course the players who’ve come to this club in last 5-6 seasons with endless accomplishments in the game haven’t done much either.

I keep saying it but the midfield badly needs another Joe Edwards type. Someone who can stick their foot in midfield when required, pop up out wide and also chip in with 7-8 goals a season.

Most loans will have a call back clause nowadays tbh. Usually as a safe guard if the loanee isn’t getting enough game time etc but the consequences mean he could be recalled to cover injuries especially if doing well, or they decide to sell as an offer too good to turn down is put on the table.

Let’s hope January doesn’t destroy us again.

I think that’s mirrored on the opposite side of the pitch too.We don’t have actual wing backs at this football club so playing a system that accommodates them is not going to work.It didn’t work last year and it won’t work this year either.

Not so sure with Gordon if you look at his goal internationally he pops up at the far post for it. The way he plays for his country would be exactly what we want imho
However the difference on the two sides was that Hussy played the role much better than Preistly due to his experience in the role and having played wing back, I think we need to give Gordon time to build trust and vice a versa tbh

But I was suprised how well Allen did when he came on experience as wing back at FGR perhaps

I think the business of Smith, Williams, Stirk, Farq, DJ, Daniels new contract, Draper is good work.
Hussey and DJT is underwhelming but time will tell.
The 352 formation is my worry as far as the recruitment (thus far) is concerned.
I also believe our ‘current’ wing back options (Knowles, Foulkes, Riley, Gordon and Allen) are average at best.
I believe we need a dominant CM player and better ‘specialist’ wing backs. Plus we need a Plan B, i.e wingers.
If we don’t sign those players, the likes of Jamille Matt will be surplus to requirements as his only real strength is the ‘aerial’ stuff.

Don’t disagree but perhaps have more faith in Gordon tbh

I understand that Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew is available and at 39 years of age could be this season’s game changer.

Hope we get those signings but my gut feeling is spending is done and we’ll see a few loans. squad cover players which we already have .and not the quality we all want .hope I’m wrong seven decent players in 11 ain’t a team that’s going anywhere .probably hold our own in this league and see some better football than last season.but we’ve had years of mediocrity.be nice to start a season thinking we’ve got a decent side and maybe challenge and get out of this league .if Trivela want to keep the existing fan base and build on it this is the bare minimum they should be aiming for .it’s probably going to need more funds and a bigger budget if we want do that now .as I think we’re probably carrying a few of Flynn’s signings that don’t fit Sadler’s criteria and he would like to move on .if they aren’t prepared to give him those funds now then it’s going to be a gradual build instead over a few seasons .

Jamma had a disappointing game friday but it wasn’t for the lack of effort just needs decent consistant balls into the box for him to do his job.
I know the one chance that made people smirk was bad luck and wrong footing by him, but I’m sure if we had consistently put 6 or 7 crosses in the same place he would of bagged a couple.
He’s getting on now and getting over injuries but that doesn’t make him a bad player all of a sudden, feed him crosses in the danger zone and I’m sure he will get us goals.
On the other hand first impressions of Draper, looked a big strong lad and not afraid of putting himself about a bit , on that performance alone looks like the player to partner DJ up front for me.
Just wish he was a signing and not a loan player, hopefully we have an option to buy January, he reminded me of a young Martin Butler the way he ran and moved into space.

I think you are right. Short of 2 or 3 real quality proven players but don’t see that happening now. Not beyond the realms of possibility that a player or 2 emerges from the pack and has the season of their lives and pushes us on. But by the same token fearful of an injury or loss of form to a Daniels or DJ.
I like the signing of young players on permanent deals but it does hint at gradual rebuild.

That’s the issue with Matt now he literally needs to be spoon fed perfect balls
A dj makes his own chances, draper will put himself about make the opponents make mistakes , even djt can run around a bit
Matts need to be spoon fed great chances to score goals is terrifying. We need more than that

With todays signings, I actually think we would be a lot better playing 4231.

The problem with that is we don’t have a proper right back.

There would be a lot less onus on Gordon and a right back to provide then (compared to wing backs) - and we get in an extra forward minded player.

5 strikers, id laugh if we played 1 up front against Morecambe now

I think the squad is looking strong now, have good options in all positions apart from RWB so hope we get one signed. We still have Maher, DJT, Marvellous and Earing when he is back to add to this.

Could Oteh play on the right?

Can foulkes play in a back three or is he more an orthodox RB? Either way, we should have enough cover for CB as mcentee can obviously play there and comley at a push if really needed.
Going to be interesting to see how Saturday at Solihull moors shapes up and whether we try different formations as well as all the line up changes that will happen.

Even getting on the bench is competitive.

7 subs:

  1. Reserve keeper (Smith)
  2. Central defender (Williams)
  3. One midfield (Comley or Riley)
  4. Tierney
  5. Oteh
  6. Matt or Draper
  7. 1 of Allen, DJT, Foulkes, Maher, + RWB

Sadler will have his work cut out to keep everyone happy.
