Who should we keep?

Asiimwe, Hall, Chang, Lipsiuc can also beat players and progress us up the pitch with the ball on the ground rather than in the air.

What they cannot do is get on the pitch if the manager does not pick them.

I’ll give you Barrett, although he doesn’t do it anywhere near as often as Gordon. Uncle Albert maybe if he comes on with 5 left and isn’t completely knackered. But to suggest Gordon isn’t one is just yet more nonsense.

Based on? :joy: They’d have to get on the pitch first

Chang is aggressive, he’ll press but he’s also calm and composed on the ball. Lipsiuc an all action, powerful midfield player. He wants to run, wants to work hard. Hall is a box-to-box midfielder, he likes to win the ball, drive with it and is quite athletic.

Totally agree. Yes he’s made a couple of errors, misplaced passes, in recent games but the ongoing criticism of Liam Gordon is unfathomable to me.

One of the few players in the squad willing and able to make a decent attacking run down the wing, take on players and beat them. He may not be as good a crosser as someone like Barrett, Allen or McEntee but he’s nowhere near the top of the list of our problems.

Yeah Levi has been ok, but he’s 24. He gets discussed as ā€˜one for the future’ as if he’s a teenager. Is he really going to improve that much?

Gordon gets us up the pitch - I won’t argue that. I will say he has has a good season too - however the reason he is still playing league two is that his final ball and delivery are absolutely abysmal.

Defensively he is very good too - he’s been shattered recently though. Wing back is a very demanding position (that’s on Sadler).

Just to exemplify that - take a look at assists (obviously there are other metrics but that’s a direct one for wing backs).

In his entire career - Liam Gordon has just 6 assists in league football. I had to double check.

Connor Barrett has more than that (9) in less than 1 season.

That’s damning.

Liam Gordon will get a club higher up the food chain than Walsall. I would expect an established league one club, at least, to come in for him in the summer. As a free transfer, it’s an absolute no brainer.

I think that we signed Weir as the next off the production line replacement.

I’d like to see both players stay, but I think that Gordon can double his money at a bigger club.

They may think that if they think they can work on his crossing and final ball. Sadler certainly hasn’t improved it.

A lot of ā€˜they’s there too :joy:

Great cross for Harrison’s rubbish header on Saturday.

Great cross for Matt against Vale after 12 seconds, following a wonderful piece of individual skill.

For context, I’ve been watching ā€˜Wide Receiver’ on Netflix recently. I’ve always followed the Raiders (Oakland/ Los Angeles / now Las Vegas) and on the documentary, Devante Adams was playing for my team. He is hated by most Raiders fans and he doesn’t come across as a team player. HOWEVER, with better players around him, he would win more games and look like a better player. It’s a brilliant insight into professional sport and how injuries can derail your reputation and career.

I think lower championship is probably Liam Gordon’s eventual threshold, but I think that he’s underrated by many Walsall fans. He showed remarkable determination to come back from a career threatening injury and his contribution to the team has been very, very good, in my opinion. He’s also a low maintenance pro, who seems very popular with his teammates.

I think you’re miles off. Sorry. :handshake:

Yeah, it’s bizarre how little credit he gets. Two excellent seasons, after one completely effected by injury. I could pick out a single weakness (or more) in every single player in this squad. I could probably do it with the whole league. Not many do what is actually their job much better than Gordon in our side.

Alright Gabby…

Gabby?

Liam Gordon has been more than good enough for us, would happily see him tied down to a longer deal, regardless of what league we’re playing in next season.

It looks like a few players are contracted, so some fan favourites will stay (Comley, Josh G for example). The loan players will return to their main clubs, so not many names left. I would give new contracts to Stirk, Maher, Thomas, but no one else. Whatever league next season, there will be new players.

Liam Gordon hate is strange imo he gets us 40/50 yards up the pitch very often. Can pick holes in every players game (some multiple holes) so the judgement that his crossing ability makes him bad is bizarre.

We could do a lot worse and would miss him if he left this summer. Weir/Allen aren’t wingbacks imo either left centre halfs in this 5 or fullbacks in a 4.

I meant Gordon’s attacking threat from corners, not in open play. In the last two games, he has put in two excellent crosses: one for Jamma’s disallowed goal versus Port Fail and for the other for Harrison’s woeful header versus Barrow - but they have been exceptions to the rule, as his final ball is generally mediocre. I like Gordon, he has had some good performances this season, but his form has fallen off a cliff recently. Yes, he’s played a lot of games for us, but his frequent jaunts to South America have knackered him! The jury’s out for me whether we should try to keep him - I certainly wouldn’t engage in a bidding war for him!

That stat is damning but sums Gordon’s contribution up completely! There are better options out there.

Most, if not all teams have a full back covering the team when they have an attacking corner, so I’m not sure that is a criticism of Gordon. In fact it’s actually more a criticism of Barrett if he is going forward for corners over Gordon and hasn’t scored from one.
