D 0-0 vs Alfreton Town (A) - FA Cup Second Round - Tue 5th Dec, 7:45pm

GAME TO BE PLAYED ON TUESDAY 5th DECEMBER, 7:45pm

Live on BBC iPlayer

The game on BBC1 was to have netted us £60k. On iPlayer the fee is just £15k. I wonder if we’ve missed out, or the original fee will stand?

If there was any logic in his behaviour he would attend matches in warmer months in speedo’s :grinning:

Having slept on it, my initial anger at Sadler has waned somewhat.

At around 12:10 I was stood outside the bogs right next to the pitch watching the ref and his assistants checking the goal mouth at our end. It was rock solid at our end and when they rolled a ball across it it was bobbling all over the shop.

The game didn’t have a chance. Should’ve been called off first thing. The disregard for fans is incredible. I’d say unbelievable but you feel that yesterday’s events were money orientated.

Whatever our Sadler agendas, I don’t think he can be blamed for yesterday. He’s probably as pissed off as we are that he had to do a whole morning’s prep with a completely unorthodox routine for a brief look at an ice rink.

And their manager is a right whoppper isn’t he?

I have both logical and completely illogical reasons to dislike around 100 clubs. Make that 101.

Should’ve been called off first thing yesterday. The story here is Alfreton being greedy and trying to get a TV game on at the expense of their own and our supporters.

On the drive up there you could see how the frost was much worse than what we’d had here and there really was no chance of it being on. Of course, what they’ve done, which is pretty clever, is spin it so the EFL team didn’t fancy it. They’re going to be well up for it on Tuesday and it’s become a potentially more difficult game for us now.

Just catching up with the thread, amazed people are blaming Sadler. The officials make the call, and they made the right one, albeit way too late. I saw pictures of the pitch when Alfreton said game on and thought that surely can’t be on…

Sadler gets a lot of deserved stick but this one ain’t on him.

Again, when the tv cameras are involved, the fans are last on the list of priorities.

That was Boxing Day of 1981, I think. Some fans, maybe a hundred or so, had been at the ground in the morning clearing snow off the pitch, but it was called off anyway because it was frozen underneath. My memory seems to think it was knocked on the head at half past one or maybe two o’clock. I was on the A5 making my way to the game and heard it on the radio. So probably half past one or I would have been further on, I expect.
The winter of 1981-82, now that was what you call a proper winter. :grimacing:

My Dad was very unimpressed when I returned home from the ground without the spade I’d taken from home, as mine had got chucked on the back of the council wagon that had arrived with loads more spaces!

To cap it all, they faced dreadful weather when they got back to Cumbria. Trust they’re all home safely.

I hope so too.
A mate who’d driven from Yorkshire up to Carlisle, to see his daughter, told me it was minus 6 as he crossed Shap Fell.

Although there’s snow forecast for Alfreton today, there are no minus temperatures forecast till Wednesday so hopefully the pitch can defrost sufficiently.

My Dad and plus a 7 year old me and a load of other supporters answered the call for help to get the pitch cleared. We’d cleared the pitch and only really had the touchlines to do when it was called off.

Called off at 1.40 pm.

The game should have been called off earlier, I think that is clear.

I think Alfreton just really wanted it on, it was their big day and the TV money is no doubt huge to them (not insignificant to us) It sounds a bit like they tried to bluff it as far as they could get by keep saying it would be on.

It shouldn’t have got to 5 minutes before kick off before calling it off. It’s happened now so not much we can do. It could become an even bigger game if we pull someone good in the draw.

Like the Peterborough game in '98. By the time it went ahead we knew the winners would play ManUre. Big following from Walsall that night and plenty from the home team too.

I think in '96 when the Ipswich game went ahead at the fourth or fifth attempt we were playing for the chance of taking on Villa. I forget whether that would have been at home or away.

I went to both and booked several days off work for the Ipswich game to keep being called off! Think it was Villa at home if we won.

The Peterborough game was an amazing atmosphere, it felt almost like a promotion game or a cup semi final.

Tell me about it
I was working for Walsall council at the time, and i was sent to the flats in Brownhills, Wayne and Baily house because nobody could get any cold water through the taps
After a bit of investigation, i found out that the mains water pipe was frozen solid, and in fact inside the same cupboard was the fire hydrants that the fire brigade used, and it had frozen so much, that it had pushed the head of the stop tap off, and it had stripped the thread, so i couldn’t screw it back in
But i didn’t know this when i had started to defrost the cold main on the ground floor, because it had happened in the cupboard on the 14th floor :grimacing:
I couldn’t find the fire brigades stop tap outside because everywhere was about a foot deep in snow, by the time i had got back to the depot to get another stop tap and back, the pipe had defrosted and the whole block was flooded, cascading down the stairs and into the lifts, and the fire brigade were there.
If it hadn’t been for the fact that every flat had about a 3 inch step into the flat, they would have been flooded as well.
Even though i thought that i had tried my best, i got a proper bollocking :man_facepalming:

My Dad definitely cant attend the re-arranged time, and I have an outside chance as I leave work in Cov at 18:30.

Wounded twice from one game

Weather forecast has improved for Tuesday
4 and 5C will thaw the pitch.

Hope so . Fantastic gesture by the club when they got back. What a journey there and back for those loyal supporters  :raised_hands:
