D 0-0 vs Alfreton Town (A) - FA Cup Second Round - Tue 5th Dec, 7:45pm

Once that’s thawed, the rain will make it equally as difficult.

Last time I saw it it was very very heavy already

Loved this day Man City in 1986 in the cup at Fellows park. I was sitting on the corrugated stand at the back of the street end. #playinanyweather :facepunch::santa::facepunch:

Yes, I remember it too. We were the live radio match that day, too. The commentators said we were trying to play too much football for the conditions.

The picture would make a good Christmas card for the club.

Remember it well…my cousin took me as i was 12 coming 13. I waited outside the tavern in the town while she had a pint and i had a coke!!!. Great times :timer_clock: :ok_hand:. I remember we played the Wolves at Fellows park that season in the same conditions and my late dad took me. Loved that team…goals galore…couldn’t defend for toffee mind ya :grinning::facepunch:.

Or a snow globe.

Rosebud.

And isn’t that Willie Naughton in the pic?

For anyone that used to go to the home games back then, there was some weirdo who used to shout, “Willie, Willie, Willie!” at the top of his voice!

I remember a routine back then when we would overload with 2 or 3 wingers on one side by the touch line, straight from kick off; invariably, the forward would pass it to the other, who’d knock it back and then Shakespeare or Paul Jones would lump it straight out of play!

I was mortified as a kid because the players were so close to the touch line that they’d hear the old man next to me screaming Naughton’s name and they’d look at each other, shake their heads and chuckle.

Now I realise that it was just something to take the pressure off the game itself and make it enjoyable for his young son…

And, yes, that young lad was me.

MORAL: never let the football get in the way of a good day out at the football.

And if you don’t get the Rosebud reference, you can stick the snow globe where the sun don’t shine!

Perhaps when you are taking your last breath, many years in the future, you can whisper “Willie” and only a select few will know what you mean.

At one time, we used to kick off with a 25 yard pass out to the wings. It looked spectacular but usually came to nothing. Beats passing back to the keeper as now, though.

It certainly is Willie naughton in that pic…loved him…especially after scoring against the wolves :grinning::grinning:…that was the season where i think we lost 5-2 away at Gillingham, beat Cardiff 6-3 on the tuesday and then beat Preston 7-3 on the following Saturday…I’m sure we beat Reading at home who were cruising to the league title 6-0…fun times as a young Saddler  :facepunch:

In the spirit of nostalgia, whatever happened to the club pendant? I’d love it if DD gave the Alfreton skipper a Walsall FC pendant at kick off time. I’m sure that it would go viral and the Yanks could add it to the merchandising.

You don’t tend to see them anymore… shame, I think.

Yes I remember that tactic of putting two men wide by the touchline from the kick off or restarts. This is from 87-8 Trevor Christie was often put out wide with Willie Naughton.

Does anyone know if there are any spare tickets available or if they will sell them on the day with the amount of people not going this time around ?

@Mazza01 has two spare if you’re after any, I think.

I’ve managed to bag 3 seat tickets from my mate who can’t go on Tuesday now. Bonus!

Would buy one

Great picture
