Debating Walsall's play-off hopes

Good chance that barrow (v Mansfield) Crewe (v Colchester) and Crawley (v Grimsby)
will all play teams that need a result on the last day

Every reason for us to give it a go and take it to the final day.

Tuesday will decide who is in and who is out of the play off chase…

If we win, that kills Donny’s momentum and outside chance…
Crawley have to travel to Wrexham, they’ll be desperate to keep the pressure on Stockport…
Morecambe host Crewe, big game, Morcambe win would take Crewe’s destiny out of their hands if we win…
No game for Wimbledon or Gillingham…

So… We win, Crawley lose, and Morecambe v Crewe draw. I think this would mean six teams fighting for 3 places:

5th - Barrow - 70pts (P:42)
6th - Crewe - 68pts (P:43)
7th - Crawley - 65pts (P:42)
8th - Walsall - 65pts (P:42)
9th - Wimbledon - 62pts (P:43)
10th - Morecambe - 61pts (P:43)

With only three games left, you could argue Wimbledon being 3 points and Morecambe being 4 points behind puts them out of it, especially with teams above them having a game in hand.

Been said above but if we can get something tuesday i realy think we can sneak a playoff spot with Barrow and Crewe having some tough games. At least one of those i think we can catch if not both.
And if we could get earing and knowles back in time for play offs we could have a real good go.

Could really do with a big following on Tuesday night. Massive boost to the team no doubt the game will be entertaining.

It could even be one of those classic pre promotion games where you can proudly say in years to come… remember Doncaster Away!

I cant wait.

If we make the play offs it’ll mean pretty much a winning team between now and then….

If players return to fitness in that time then by many people’s logic our bench for the play offs will be :-

Evan’s
Daniels
Farquarhasen
Earing
Knowles
DJ
McEntee

That would take some bravery wouldn’t it……:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

With the following not even making the squad :-

Tierney
Riley
Oteh
Jellis
James Taylor
Williams
Menayese

Odd that it’s been argued all season on that the squad lacks depth flexibility and quality….

Looks good to me when everyone is back I’d be happy with that depends how fit Knowles and Earing are by then the only concern is the spanking last week was that lack of defensive experience against a good side or just a blip?

Faal ???

Yeah true forgot he came off the bench….

That’ll be an odd one because we will need permission from West Brom to extend his loan for the play offs as the original agreement will end on first weekend in May……

If it’s extended we’ll need to lose someone off the 7 listed on the bench….probably DJT I guess…

Presumably that would equally apply to Adegboyega, Gordon and probably Okagbue? Tierney, also, although he doesn’t make your matchday play off squad. I assume that both season and half season loan deals terminate around the time you suggest?

Yes true.

I don’t think extensions are an issue so I wouldn’t anticipate anyone missing….just literally forgot Faal :eyes:

I dont think we need 3 centre halves on the bench though :slightly_smiling_face:

Just done the old Fishy calculator thing.

I think this is the best we can hope for. It assumes losing on Tuesday, drawing on the last day and winning the three home games.

It assumes Crewe only get four more points.

Anyway - it’s just brilliant to be on the Fishy calculator again because it means there’s something worth getting excited about - and it isn’t a relegation fight.

When you look at how close it could be, that 5-0 hammering at MK could be costly.

Anyone who puts any faith in these things likely hasn’t had a go at the Prediction League!

I joined the prediction league once and was absolutely cack so my predictions for this definitely shouldn’t tempt anybody to get over excited or worse, part with any dosh.

I was back working the calculator to work out the least we might reasonably need to do to make it.

Big dependency on Crewe in my sums, I have them beating Grimsby and then only picking up a point elsewhere.

Mansfield doing their best to screw us for a second season running with that result yesterday, but at least Barrow and Crewe are wobbling a bit.

Why would winning at Wimbledon be some impossible scenario on the final day if as that predictive table indicates they’re well out of play off contention by then?

Surely in injury time in that one you have about five forwards on then (DJ might even get a five minute cameo in that scenario!!!) and while I don’t quite advocate Jackson Smith playing rush keeper like Neuer did for Germany in the 2018 World cup he’d be going up for all set pieces in injury time.

So in that scenario you either score a 95 minute winner or Wimbledon have a 5 v 0 and win the game themselves, no just playing out a 1-1.

Wimbledon lost six homes this season including to likes of Sutton and Accy so not like their home record is even that good compared to all the teams up there.

Just seems a bit bizarre to actually win the three homes (which is a big ask still) and then settle for a point on the final day?

I’d love to know if there’s a manager who bottles end of seasons as much as a team managed by Nigel Clough frequently does.

They’ve had some shocking results recently and I think a few would fancy playing them in the play offs given his past failures with Sheffield United.

Of course the one time he did get a team over the line (just) was Burton in 15/16…

I think the main mistake people are making is assuming clubs will continue on their current trajectory. They don’t. But it’s impossible to know when that trajectory will change. For instance, I’d be surprised if Crewe don’t rally a bit, but when that will be, next game or last game, is anyone’s guess.

It’s all a bit hypothetical this discussion, but the table shows a point would be good enough to get 7th, so I’m struggling to understand why settling for a point is so bizarre in this particular scenario, according to you at least.
