The candidate must have recent managerial experience. Things change and the likes of Curbishley have been off the scene too long.
Ideally they know league 1 and 2.
The ideal candidate is Kenny Jacket.

Looking forward to the appointment of Director X.
Thatās a great shout.
Most of the names being suggested are ex managers in their mid fifties / sixties. This is supposed to be a long term appointment of someone with a definitive skill set. If the club are looking to emulate the model depicted in the video above, then I doubt very much if any of these guys fit that remit.
We could show the prisoners how to do the great escape, if we donāt go down of course
We could do with that from someone else, but I donāt want to derail the thread.
The names in here are aiming way too high I reckon. Looks at the other directors of football in this league. David Flitcroft, Mickey Moore, Graham Daniels (Who?), Rich Hughes (Who?) Chris Casper (Ex United player at Salford).
Some of the names in here arenāt coming for anything less than the managers job.
If that is true (which I donāt doubt) then they really arenāt suitable for the role anyway.
Iām only going off what seems to be the trend at other clubs to be fair. Maybe we are shooting higher who knows I donāt have any knowledge of who the candidates were.
Personally I think whoever came up with a the job role DoF was an absolute genius to be honest. All the important decisions none of the public fronting up. Iād rather have a top quality manager.
I guess the plan is to have both over time.
The role described in the video that Peel posted makes sense to me, however, I get that others will not see it the same way.
Clearly it is not a blueprint that all clubs follow, but if we do follow it then we wonāt be appointing the likes of many mentioned above, cuz, as you say, they are managers.
Get that but the role also includes mentoring and developing the Manager etc, hard to do that if youād had zero success in that role.
And the current Head Coach is inexperienced to say the least, a university graduate will all the badges in the world will not really cut it for me. Kenny Jacket would on paper be perfect.
I met Graham Daniels once. He was preaching in a Church as he part of Christians in Sport. He played for Cambridge and Cardiff. I donāt think heās Director of Football anymore but heās still a director. He appointed Mark Bonner as Cambridge manager. Donāt know what he was like as a footballer, but heās a great preacher.
Ah fair enough, I was trusting Wikipedia for those names so that probably is more accurate than what is here:
Even so, my point is those are the names of people that have been DoF in this league at some point. Iām sure they have all been involved in football at some stage but not to the point of people like Martin OāNeil, Laurie Sanchez, Ian Holloway and so on. I know some of these were in jest, Iām just saying those would be names in line for a managers position, DoF seem to be more ⦠well members of staff or have scouting experience. I wouldnāt be surprised if weāve barely heard of the bloke (and that is not to say it wonāt work).
I think that is a very realistic assessment. If it is the type of person you describe then they need to have broad footballing experiences (doesnāt mean they have to be of advancing years) and a really strong network.
Where did the āUniversity Graduate ā come from? Assuming you mean someone in their early 20ās which is not what I was alluding to.
Serious point here but I was genuinely expecting an appointment this week with such big games coming up. Nothing changes at Walsall. Eeeeking out those couple of weeks saving on the salary whilst clinging to the desperate hope that results improve and maybe the appointment can be deferred till the summer . Mr Pomletts business strategy which gets more worrying by the hour
I honsetly thought we would have an appointment by now. Its all in my head, but I just canāt help but feel weāre likely already looking at plan E, F, Gā¦etc.
A bit like when we sign players.
