Unnoted as not praised? Or did you mean unnoticed?
He meant he plays for Cambridge (I agree by the way, Liam Gordon was exceptional again)
Doh! My bad.
I have gone and got my Liams all mixed up! Easily done as I was just looking up Liam Kinsella to check on whether he’d been playing for Cheltenham this season, but more likely due to having the expression “Gordon Bennett” tucked away in the mind somewhere - for those of us of a certain vintage.
Yes, Liam Gordon…thought he was fantastic.
No he didn’t, no one did. I though Stirk had a good game.
Come on now, lets not be silly. We played well as a unit, and there were some good individual performances, but lets not just pretend everyone was amazing.
Stirk gave the ball away to their striker on the edge of the box under next to no pressure nearly resulting in a goal, he was unusually wasteful in possession for him, and he also got done in the air quite a few times before being given the hook.
It happens, players have bad games, I actually think he has been one of our best players this season so far, but last night wasn’t his best. Nothing he will lose his place over.
Don’t worry - I have been calling our reserve keeper Horner and called Ollie Watkins Ollie Hawkins in Euro24.
Liam Gordon is a real asset, He is one of a few that could be transfer targeted so we should ensure he is on a decent length contract.
Disagree tbh with some of the things you said there mate , Stirk gave the ball away the once but the amount he won and intercepted was a lot .
He keeps us ticking and keeps the ball moving
As for winning headers , let’s not forget he’s not the tallest so he’s not winning them all
Bit harsh really
In a really crucial area of the pitch that could have cost us, right in front of goal with the defenders spread.
The problem wasn’t actually winning them, he “got done” by actually heading them straight to the oppo on at least two occasions I can recall off the top of my head, under no challenge.
Usually, and that is why I say he has been absolutely fantastic so far this season. I thought even that was missing yesterday, though. I don’t think that is harsh, it’s just what I observed from one game. It doesn’t change my opinion of the player overall, which is an excellent deeper lying midfielder at our level. His use of the ball is usually much better and gets our attacks going.
I think Stirk had a good to average game but I think the context is that he played better in that role than some of the incumbents of the past like the Guthrie’s etc but last night he didn’t hit the heights of the previous games this season.
Just a poor night different opposition different problems ,I’m not sure but he could do better but certainly wasn’t bad imho
I was shocked at the size of Lowe when he came on against Tranmere. Big, tall, strong fooker he is,.and clearly skillful.
No disrespect to Freddie, but Nathan is a step up.
A young, goal-hungry striker. Let’s enjoy him whilst we have him.
“Once you get one, you get a taste for it,” he added. "The second chance fell and I was actually disappointed not to get a hat-trick.
“When you score two, you feel confident. It gives you the chance to try more. It was a finger-tip save and I didn’t think he was going to get it. And yes, I might have got the match ball, but it doesn’t change the fact I missed a pen.”
If Adomah is Uncle Albert, is Lowe, Rodney? Just need Del Boy now for the trio.
That should trigger a few replies
Isn’t Dave, Rodney?
Well there’s enough plonkers posting on here.
Shouldn’t that be ‘Watched t’game’?
Aye, lad, 'appen.
That’s the magic of the cup, last night was a great occasion as far as I’m concerned.
Yes there were a few sloppy passes and the goalkeeper ought to have done better with their opening goal but I thought the saddlers were magnificent against higher league opponents.
The effort the team put in to claw their way back into the game was tremendous and they deserve huge praise.
Even in his interview MS sounded thrilled by a memorable night.
Huddersfield are well versed in the dark arts (cheating gets) and it served them right.
I can’t wait to see who we draw.
Five good performances (despite Saturday’s defeat) at the start of the season give me real hope that we can make a challenge for promotion.
As for Stirk, I accept that he has been adequate against the very poor teams, but he showed his lack of ability against a higher level of opposition last night. When given his chance, Lakin did really well. He replaced Stirk when we were two goals down and was one of the key factors in us turning the game round. He certainly deserves to start on Saturday.
@geordiesaddler That is a very good post and I don’t doubt your football knowledge at all.
However, I do fear the unleashed wrath of Flynn Ball and I think it’s a banana skin waiting to happen after the euphoria of last night and a potentially exciting cup draw (I shall predict Birmingham City after somebody correctly predicted Huddersfield in the previous round). EDIT - Newcastle/Forest or Fulham, I guess!
I think you perhaps underestimate the presence of Jamille Matt around the club: Sadler often makes him captain and other teams do fear his physical presence. While I acknowledge that Nathan Lowe is not Bambi on Ice, Jamma is more accustomed to the pinches, punches in the ribs at set pieces, treading on toes, rakes down the Achilles, that Flynn will try and get his players to enact. Flynn was a bit of a ratter as a player and he’s quite a snotty, sleeves pulled up manager too.
I’m not suggesting that Sadler should be afraid of playing his more creative players but I do think that he should exercise caution, and prepare for each game differently, according to the attributes of the opposition.
Personally, I wouldn’t risk Earing as a starter against Cheltenham because he is injured a lot of the time. Equally, Albert is a terrific impact sub who can change a tight game.
My question would therefore be, regardless of what you or I think, what will Sadler do? I genuinely think they’ll be a bit of bad blood and wouldn’t be surprised if we get a rude awakening, Sadler and Flynn barely give eye contact on their handshake (Conte / Tuschel-esque) and the post-match interview includes the line, “They came to frustrate us and we had to be patient but the fans stayed with us.”
